October 19, 1860 o----------o James Madison Gambrell, Sr. (18 MAY 1786 - 5 JULY 1867) Mary Reid Gambrell (6 FEB 1785 - 19 OCT 1860) Child (unknown) It was thought that Mary was a REED before her marriage. A FAMILY ALBUM reads that she was Mary Reid born 6 Feb 1785 and died 19 Oct 1860 in Anderson County. These dates were also recorded on her Tombstone per Volume four (4) of the Anderson County Cemeteries Book page 136. "The Book of the Dead" by Rev. R.M. Smith on page 432 has her last name spelled "REID", but gave no dates. James and Mary Gambrell's graves were in a little plot at the 'Home Place' by the West side of what is known as River Road, the road from Powdersville to Piedmont. There was also a child buried there. Their graves were destroyed which was located about 30 feet off the road near the property line between two houses. James Gambrell, Sr. died just a couple of years after the close of the Civil War. The South was in ruins. The only land that James Gambrell, Sr. had left was the 'Home Place' consisting of 190 acres. He probably divided his other land between his children before or during the Civil War. The "Home Place' was in the hands of the Court and sold at auction on 28 DEC 1871. It was bought by J.B. Byrum for $600. On the same day it was deeded as a gift to Amanda Gambrell, daughter of J.B. Byrum and wife of James Gambrell. Jr. By: Lowry Wilson
