Latitude N 34 37.441 x Longitude W 83 08.361 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ Due to the dearth of minutes and records by which to document this bit of history, little is known of the early organization of Chauga Church. However, as early as 1796, "Brother Cleveland was instructed by Sarepta Baptist Association, Georgia, to preach every third Sunday at Chogy "Chauga" Church. Chauga Church was organized as an arm of Shoal Creek Baptist, Hart County, Georgia, with the following assisting in the rites: Revs. John Cleveland, Dozier Thornton, Francis Callaway, Sr., Thomas Gilbert, and John Carter. Rev. Cleveland was the first pastor. In 1808, a log structure was erected a short distance below where Highway 123 crosses Chauga River and just above the confluence of Chauga and Tugaloo Rivers. Rain-swollen waters of Chauga later destroyed this building. The next building, another log structure, was located on the left of Highway 123, about five miles west of Westminister, standing almost directly opposite the present-day building. A recovered list shows the following to be some of the members in 1813: Elijah Land and wife, Eleanor; James Yowell and wife, Mary; William Jolly, Sr., and son, William; Joshua Yowell and wife, Sallie Cleveland Yowell and Obedience Cleveland. In 1823, the Tugaloo Baptist Association, five years old at that time met at Chauga, with Littleton Meeks as moderator and William Ledbetter, clerk. In 1829, Chauga, with Barch Chambers, pastor, was the "mother" church organizing Holly Springs Church on Highway 76. In 1884, John Dickson gave two and on-half acres for the present site of the church. Eli Burchfield gave a large portion of the lumber and did much of the carpentry. In 1887, Chauga became a member of Beaverdam Baptist Association. o----------o Levi Lyles and Parthana Lyles, two of the Oconee Lyleses about whom we know very little, were members of Chauga Baptist Church in 1847, according to a membership list for that year. They were admitted by letters of reference for another Baptist church that we have not identified. Chauga Baptist Church is located about 3 1/2 miles southeast of Hopewell Methodist Church and about a mile west of U.S. Highway 123. --jrl There were no Lyleses listed in 1818 and no sign of any of the family in the records prior to 1844. Many of the records from the 1820s and 1830s are very faint and are nearly unreadable on the microfilm but I am fairly sure that I would have seen a Lyles in the 1818 membership list or a literate Lyles being appointed to a church office. From 1836 to 1842 the church nearly disappears. Lots of folk leave andthere are only 8 members, one male and seven females (I have tried to alter the spelling and punctuation as little as possible): "First Saturday in August 1836 Met at Chauga and siting in conference all in peace 1st dismissed Sister Mary Minton by letter 2nd dismissed Jane Cogins by letter 3rd dismissed Sister Mary Tannery by letter 4th dismissed Levi Tannery and wife Parthener Tannery by letter 5th dismissed James Mason and wife by letter and concluded." Many of the records for the next six years are very faint but in 1842 the following entry appears: "Saturday before the fifth Sunday in May 1842 the Committee appointed bythe Association met at Chauga to know the minds of the few remaining members of Said Church and finding one mail member and seven females, we concluded to remain a church hoping for an increase to inable us to live together as Brother Barch Chambers has agreed to attend to us for one yearand concluded." At the bottom of the page for August 12th 1844 there may be a note receiving --- Liles into the church. It requires a lot of imagination when staring at the microfilm and copies don't show it at all. It will take an examination of the original document to know for sure. Then, four years later, there is this note from Jan 8 1848: "... 4 agreed to grant Sister [difficult to read] Jemenia Willis a letter of dismission from us and Brother Liles and wife letters of dismission from us." But Levi and Parthena stay in the church a while longer since the record records the following note from Oct 4th 1852: "The Church dismisses Levi Liles and his wife by letter." But the Liles story at Chauga is not quite over. I found the following entry very near the end of the microfilmed records: 1853 "Saturday before the first Sunday in April the Church met and after service sit in conference 1 invited visiting brethern to sit with us then call for the peace of the Church all in peace then call for reference none then call for business and the Church calls for Brother Wm M Marton to preach to them and he agrees to do so this year then open the door of the Church and received Martha Liles by letter and close." The records end shortly thereafter. But there is one final note: the date on the membership list which we found on the web is probably wrong. I think that it is 1845. There is another list from 1848 (this date is very clear) showing Levi Liles and a scribble which could easily be "dismissed" beside his name. --Bryan MALES William Barton, excluded Joseph G. Following Jim's death on April 20, 2000, Bryan has taken on maintaince of the web pages with the assistance of Jim's sister, Marianne Lyles. o----------o One article says: The roots of New Hope Church appear to stem from the Chauga Church, located in Franklin Co. GA. and known as Shoal Creek. (USGS mapping does not show a Shoal Creek/Chauga church/cemetery in Franklin County - only a Shoal Creek cemetery located in Hart County, right below the SC I-85 Welcome Center. Franklin County is next to Hart.) This is now SC and on hwy. 123 going out of Westminster toward GA and SC state line. Also, the article mentions Head of Enoree, a church est. in 1789, later named Reedy River, also, named Shoal Church. In 1818 the name of Shoal Creek was changed to New Hope. Jennie Boggs o----------o These are in SC now. but long ago that area was still GA. so the records would be in SC. Chauga Church is out 123 (out of Westminster) toward Toccoa. Just a few miles, on the right is a store and the church sits up behind the store. The left turn would take you to the Dr. Johns Rd that leads out of Westminster. However to get to the church and cemetery the people had to ride a ferry across the river to get to it. The ferry was near the lake side of Westminster. Then the state line, as far as I know, was down the middle of the river. I suppose where the original church was is probably covered with water now. On up the river there was Jarret's Manor and an Indian village, then up the river a little farther was Prather's Bridge. I have Indian beads that came from the village. A long time ago they let some folks go and dig for Indian relics. We just happen to be a couple of the folks. The burial ground was there and we got to walk thru that but couldn't take anything on that side of the mound where we dug. But we found lots of beads, parts of piece pipes and musket balls. Jennie Boggs o----------o Per: Chauga Baptist Church - 200 years 1784-1984 History, page 9 Shoal Creek Baptist church (1796-1804) in GA, entered the GA Sarepta Baptist Association in 1796. In 1800 the membership of Shoal Creek (GA) was 212 and increased for 4 years until 1804. The congregation shifted/moved in 1804 to necessitate the removal/transfer of the Constitution and Church book to SC, with the adoption of the name Chauga Baptist (C030) in Jan-1811. This indicates Chauga Baptist (C030) was really called Shoal Creek Baptist when it moved to SC and places her as the mother of these two church locations. Coneross Baptist (C038) was an arm of Shoal Creek until 1798. Hepzibah Baptist (C087) until about 1803. Liberty Baptist until 1804. Chauga Baptist (C030) until 1811. o----------o Tugalo Baptist Association was established in 1818 (Georgia address). In 1822 they had 22 member churches. Their records mention Chauga, Liberty, Beaverdam and Perkin's Creek Baptist churches. They say these churches are located in Pendleton County SC.
