HISTORY: -------- Mount Tabor Baptist Church, constituted November 1884, was a mission of Westminster First Baptist Church. Members met in a log schoolhouse on property donated by Wm. Turner Tannery. The following spring, they "hulled-in" their church on the same land beside a country road, 1-1/2 miles from the Southern Railway's "Old Harbin Stop" and an equal distance from the ferry crossing on the Tugaloo River. Pastors for the monthly Saturday-Sunday services often traveled to the area by rail and stayed in the homes of various members. The ferry site accommodated both the crossing of the river by Georgia members and baptisms. Members built onto the small building over the years when weekly services, along with Sunday School and mid-week prayer meetings created a need. They also added a pastorium and a fellowship hall. The original pot-bellied stove, kerosene lamps, wooden floors, primitive plumbing, and a well were upgraded to gas heating, electricity, carpeting, indoor plumbing, and in 1959, city water and a baptistery. The surrounding woods gave way to a cemetery, the dirt road was paved, the old rail bed became US 123, and the river is now Hartwell Lake. The old frame church wore out. In 1981, a brick church was built higher up the hill, with additions since then, of a fellowship hall and a large Sunday School wing. One of the first recorded activities of that 1884 church was to collect monies for missions. The facilities and membership may be different today; but this church is still a strong supporter of missions.
