Latitude N 34 38.446 x Longitude W 83 03.880 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ o----------o Pleasant Hill Baptist Church was organized in the year 1870 and from the beginning a school on Sunday was held. It was a school for learning mostly to read. The adult men and women had to work late at night and Sundays were the only time they had for such activities. The only textbook was a very work King James version of the Holy Bible. It was hard for them to read and complicated for them to understand. They were anxious to learn to read it, so they tried hard and with the help of a few persons who were somewhat more fortunate because they were men and women who had been or were house slaves and their masters and mistresses had taught them to read out of necessity. These people taught their students to memorize short verses and familiar passages from the Holy Bible which they never forgot. With their prayers for understanding God helped them. During the year of 1888 under the pastorship of the Reverend P.A. Pinson, who was an outstanding orator of his day, started a class for children. The class was held on Sunday morning of each month. He used the question and answer method for teaching this class, such as, "Who made you?" the children were taught to answer in concert "God made me." This type of Sunday School went on for an indefinite period of time. From the memory of some of the founders of the church, who have long since passed on, we found from the church history that as late as 1900 Mrs. Mattie Morgan, Mrs. Lizzie Bright, Mrs. Hattie Butler (Perry) Mrs. Sallie White and Mrs. Lula White Parks and possibly others continued to carry on a class for teen aged girls and boys. Later a singing class was organized by the late Mr. George Campbell and Mr. Isaiah Oglesby. This generated much interest among the young men and young women and they began to hold Sunday School every Sunday. From this a Sunday School began to take shape. The first literature for Sunday School was a little book called a Catechism and other books handed down from Westminster Baptist Church (white). Children's Day was celebrated the second Sunday in June. Each child recited a poem from memory, sang songs. It was important that every child perform during the day's activities. Pleasant Hill Sunday School has been affiliated with the Sunday School and B.T.U. Convention since its beginning. ( Baptist Training Union has been a part of the African American Baptist Church since it's early beginnings. It was a part of Christian education designed to instruct all church members in basic bible beliefs, Baptist doctrine, church membership, discipline, policy and procedures. It was traditionally held in most Baptist Churches on Sunday evenings, prior to evening worship. It began as a training ground for young people. Consequently, the predecessor of Baptist Training Union was the Baptist Young People's Union (BYPU). ) During the thirties and forties Brother George Allen Childers, a very capable and understanding superintendent along with Brother George Poole, his assistant, officially organized the Sunday School, with capable teachers for each age group and a secretary. Brother Leonard Poole with Brother Frank Hunter, his assistant, succeeded Brother G.A. Childers and Brother G.W. Poole. They worked diligently. After Brother Leonard Poole moved to another community Brother Frank Hunter succeeded him as Superintendent with Brother Henry T. Childers as his assistant. They continued to work faithfull. Brother Henry T. Childers became superintendent after the death of Brother Hunter, with Brother Henry Carter, assistant. The Official Staff: Brother Henry Carter, superintendent, Brother James H. Verner, assistant, Miss Nellie N. Carter, secretary, Miss Delphene Hampton, assistant secretary. Teachers: Brothers James Verner, B.F. Hunter, Willie Washington, Harry Hunter, Sisters Andrea Hawthorne, Doris Grant, B.M. Hawthorne, Sophie J. Hawthorne, Pamela Bolton, Jeanetta Moore, and Gloria Washington. o----------o The little church with the big and friendly heart. Pleasant Hill Baptist Church located on the outskirts of Westminster SC was organized in 1869 as a brush arbor building. Treetops provided shade sawdust from a nearby sawmill made a cool soft carpet for the floor and slabs were used as seats for pews. Hymnbooks were unknown and the entire congregation was one big choir. Service was held each Sunday during the months of May through October. It was too cold to have service during the winter. Reverend Andy McGriffin preached the first sermon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in 1870 with a set of deacons borrowed from another church. Today the church has its own deacons and consists of approximately fifty families who constantly strive to work together in harmony and live by the motto: "everybody is somebody and Jesus Christ is all". Our door swings open on welcome hinges to visitors and friends. Since April 1994 Reverend Edward R. Scott has served as pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Under Reverend Scott's leadership new souls have come to the Lord and our membership has grown. We celebrate the joyous occasion of our 125th Anniversary Celebration in October 1994. There is something for all ages in our many organizations consisting of Deacon Board Deaconess Brotherhood Club Young Ladies Missionary Senior Ladies Missionary WMWA Trustees Sunday School Youth Choir Senior Choir Male Choir Gospel Choir Usher Board BTU YA's Youth Group and others. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life nor angels or principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39. Submitted by: C151 Church. o----------o The church is the greatest influence in the community. It is one of the oldest established institutions in the world. It may be known by many other names, but wherever a temple, a cathedral, or a house of worship is established, it makes for a better community, city, country and people. The real church represents a group of God-fearing people, training for Christian growth. It opens its doors to all races, colors and creeds. It was such a group of dedicated Christian men and women, fresh out of the bonds of slavery, which went from house to house with a prayer in their hearts and a song on their lips, thanking God for their freedom and the opportunity to live as human beings. They prayed the prayer of faith with earnest hearts and what was to be, and is now known as Pleasant Hill Baptist Church was born. In the year 1869 a brush harbor was erected and service were held each Sunday during the months of May through October. It was too cold to have service during the winter months, but the group carried on prayer service from house to house. In the spring of 1870 a spot of ground was donated by Samuel Frasier and M.P. Dixon to Emory McDowell, Albert Teasley and other Trustees. This land was to be used only for church purposes. The Brush Harbor was rebuilt with fresh tree tops whenever necessary, in order to provide shade for the worshippers. A nearby sawmill provided sawdust for a cool soft carpet for the ground, and seats for pews were made from slabs obtained from the same sawmill. Hymn books were unknown and the whole congregation was one big choir. Prayer was the key and God heard and answered their prayers. A small group of men, W.M. Earle, John Williams, Gad Thompson and Alford Knox were instrumental in getting the group organized. A log church house was erected on the same spot of ground. In the summer of 1870, the church was officially organized by Reverend Andy McGuffin, a white minister. He used a set of borrowed deacons from another church during the organization. The above named men were ordained as the first deacons of the church. The first pastor, Reverend Daniel Presley, served the church for a short period of time. He was followed by Reverend Lewis Whitfield. Reverend W.R. Parker was the third pastor, and during his administration a large group of men and women became converted, and were baptized and added to the church group. The fourth pastor, Reverend Daniel Burris, was followed by Reverend P.A. Pinson. From the very beginning to this time, twenty-one years had elapsed and the church was going strong, growing by leaps and bounds. It became necessary to expand. Submitted by: C151 Church. It's possible that a tombstone inscription typing volunteer confused the two church locations. A volunteer is needed to physically update each cemetery location. When you see the term (Negro) after their surname, that normally means the information was taken from a newspaper obituary notice, rather than the actual tombstone.
