According to this article and other sources, C.F. (not C.H.) was the first resident minister ---------- On November 20, 1853, St. John's was organized by members of the German Colonization Society of Charleston, South Carolina who founded the town of Walhalla in 1850. Services were originally in a house in West Union which was purchased from Col. Joseph Gresham and belonged to Jacob Schroder. The present structure was begun in 1859 and dedicated on March 17, 1861. ---------- St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Walhalla, was organized November 20, 1953 as The German Evangelical Lutheran Congregation at Walhalla (Der deutschen evangelischen lutherischen Gemeinde zu Walhalla, Pickens District, South Carolina) be German immigrants and members of the German Colonization Society of Charleston, SC who founded the town in 1850 under the leadership of General John A. Wagener, founder of Walhalla. When they surveyed and laid out their town in December 1849, they reserved the southwest corner of Main and Church streets for their church. Services were first held in a house in West Union belonging to Jacob Schroder and originally to Colonel Joseph Grisham, from whom the society purchased 17,000 acres of land in Pickens District. By 1852, they had built a chapel-school house adjacent to the German Cemetery on Church Street, which they used for worship until the present church was built, 1859-1861. According to German custom, thirty-eight persons signed the constitution as heads of their households. Catherine D. Bullwinkel was the only female who signed, inasmuch as her husband had been killed in an accident earlier and she was the head of her household. John Kaufmann, "master builder-mechanic" from Lorach-Tumringen, Granddutchy of Baden-Baden, Germany, was builder of St. John's assisted by members of the congregation. The massive frame timbers are interlocked and held together with wooden pegs. The four post-beams supporting the belfry and steeple are 60 feet long and square 16 inches at the base and 15 to 14 inches at the top. The timber throughout is heart pine and the inside of the church is distinct and unique. The alter-pulpit is of High Church German architecture and is made of "twisted wood". The historic old building was dedicated in German on Sunday, March 17, 1861, by Pastor August Angerer, followed by a sermon in English by the Reverend Thaddeus Street Boinest, pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pomaria, Newberry District. In the afternoon, Pastor Angerer preached in German and the Reverend J.B. Moser of Newberry preached in English. The present bell-clock was installed in 1889, the first being a ship's bell of undetermined origin. Except for the present stained-glass windows installed in 1910, the building is little changed from its original design. The Good Shepherd window behind the pulpit is from the German Evangelical St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Augusta, Georgia, and was given to St. John's by Sophia Rimrodt Ritter in 1940 when that congregation merged with the English Church to form Resurrection Lutheran Church. German was the language of worship, the constitution specifically stating that "the congregation shall not accept for further consideration or expedition any proposal concerning a changing of the church into anything but a German Evangelical Lutheran Church where the service is being held in the German language". As with other German-speaking communities and organizations, however, the language barrier became an occasion of controversy, and for a while there was an English Lutheran Church organized by second-generation German-Americans, who naturally desired the English language. Reluctantly, the constitution was amended and English began to be used more frequently. In 1908, the German language was discontinued altogether when the Reverend Thaddeus Bowman Epting of Pomaria, Newberry County, SC became the first native South Carolinian to pastor St. John's and the first minister who did not preach in German. English also became the official language of the church records and minute books. Up until that time, the name St. John's was used in only a few instances when referring to the church. St. John's is a congregation of the South Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America with a baptized membership of 501 adults and children. Submitted by: Reverend George B.
