The pastor was R.R. Doyle. In 1913, the Whitmire Methodist Church closed its doors and united with the Salem Church. In the 1950s, the congregation decided to once again use the Whitmire building. After a few years, they decided that the Salem location was the best place to be and went back. In 1956, under the direction of Homer Griffith and James Whitmire, the old building was torn down and replaced. There was a continuing need for more classrooms and a fellowship hall. In 1986, Reverend Billy Rogers instituted a building committee. Reverend Ralph Bainbridge was appointed to the church. In May 1987 and in August of that year a ground- breaking ceremony was held. The shell was contracted out and two generations of Whitmires and other members of the church finished the interior. Reverend Bainbridge has served the church from 1987 through June 1995; the congregation has grown from 62 to 99 members. On May 14, 1989, bishop Joseph B. Bethea, assisted by Reverend Richard McAlister, the District Superintendent of the Anderson District, dedicated the new building to the glory of God. Former pastors and ministers from the community were present. Salem United Methodist Church is a beacon of God's love as the members continue to help spread the gospel here in Oconee County and throughout the world.
