Mr Ellison stopped plowing and walked with them to the graveyard located at the head of a gully that is now near the Harrogate Subdivision. The field rock grave markers have long since been removed and the ground plowed over. o----------o SEEN YOUR QUESTION AND RESPONDING. MAULDIN WAS MY G GRANDMOTHERS MAIDEN NAME, SHE MOVED FROM EASLEY AFTER SHE MARRIED A PATTERSON AND MOVED TO GAINESVILLE GA BY WAGON. IN MY RESEARCH SOME YEARS AGO I GAINED SOME INFO. THERE WAS A MAULDIN CEMETERY IN EASLEY, IT CONTAINED THE REMAINS OF NEGRO SLAVES ALONG WITH MEMBERS OF THE MAULDIN FAMILY. I WAS TOLD THE MAULDINS WERE REMOVED AFTER THE WAR SO AS NOT TO BE BURIED WITH NEGRO'S. DO NOT KNOW WHERE THEY WERE MOVED TO...ALSO FROM SAME SOURCE I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A MAULDIN WHO WAS THE ONE THAT FIRED THE FIRST SHOT ON FORT SUMPTER THAT STARTED THE WAR. THIS IS STATED ON THE BACK OF HIS GRAVE STONE. SOMEWHERE IN MY COLLECTION IS THE LETTER I RECEIVED FROM AN OLDER MAN WHO WAS A HISTORIAN AT THE COLLEGE. IF NEED BE I CAN DIG IT OUT AND SEND YOU A EXACT COPY OF THE INFO HE SENT ME...DONALD VITELLI harbuck3@yahoo.com o----------o From: don vitelli Sent: Friday, January 30, 2009 9:20 PM Paul I looked for that letter but need to look in more boxes. In the mean time I looked in the book I had printed and this is what I entered on my g grandmothers entry. FIRST SHOT FIRED ON FORT SUMPTER THAT STARTED the war between the states was fired by a William Mauldin. William never married and died in 1872. HIS GRAVE WAS REMOVED FROM THE MAULDIN CEMETERY IN 1923 AND BROUGHT TO "WEST VIEW CEMETERY. The reason for removing his grave was this "The Mauldin family had lots of slaves and as they died their graves are in the Mauldin burying grave yard. They had cousins and friends buried there and as more moved they were buried there and it became a large BLACK CEMETERY". There were 6 Mauldin's graves there. William was one of them. The other 5 could not be located. The tombstones are gone. Now I don't know if William is part of my g grandmothers (ELIZA ANN MAULDIN) BORN appox. 1860) family but she was from Easley and after marring Patterson around 1878 they moved to Hall county Ga. I know she was from Easley and was from a well to do family.. I don't know where West View Cemetery is but must be in or near Easley. I will look it up on the net....My g grandmother I have noted was member of Salem Baptist Church, but don't know what town or state its in....Lots of Salem Baptist Churches.... Hope this helps in some way.... Ohh my book is online...don http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/v/i/t/Donald-G-Vitelli/ TOMBSTONE TRANSCRIPTION NOTES: ------------------------------ a. = age at death b. = date-of-birth d. = date-of-death h. = husband m. = married p. = parents w. = wife Field Stone Markers
