A passage in the Burrell Perritt family history says: "On July 15, 1859, John P. and Milly Perritt (the former Artamilissa Alexander of Little River in Oconee) deeded one acre of land on Twelve Mile River, on the road from Wolf Creek to Anderson Mills (now Meece's Mill Road in 2008) for location of a Methodist Church called Perritt's Chapel. The church stood for a long time just out the (Meece Mill Road ) some distance southeast from the Old Perritt home (Burrell and later, his son John's home). The original was a small log structure and is long gone. The church was said by some to later take on the name Salem Methodist Church." No mention of a graveyard in this passage but there could have been one, of course. The Burrell Perritt family cemetery is obliterated now by over 100 years of plowing by various later farm owners and of tree growth. It stands in a pine tree thicket in the southeast corner of the intersection of Meece Mill Road and Reece Mill Road west of Pickens about 3 miles. First go from Main St. in Pickens down Ann St. ( highway 178 ) toward Rosman. But at the foot of Ann Street, turn left just below the Chevrolet Dealership onto Reece Mill Rd. and travel west approximately 3 miles. You will come to the intersection of Reece Mill Rd. and Meece Mill Rd. The graves are up in the Pine thicket on your left just 200 or so feet on a rise of land before getting to the intersection. This is on private property now of course and I don't know the new owners. It last was owned by Dr. George Sutter but has been sold. There are no visible markers that we could find many years ago. Turning right at the intersection, toward Twelve Mile Grocery, the first little brick house on your left in the corner sits on the footprint of g-Grandfather Burrell Perritt, and later his son, Grandfather John P. Perritt's plantation home. The best info I can gather is that those buried in the Old Burrell Perritt family Cemetery are: Burrell Perritt b. 1792 -d.1859 Eleanor Ashmore Perritt b.1798 --d.1851 --- daughter, Sara Jane Wright, B. Dec, 7, 1827, d.1855,wife of John B. Wright. --- son, William H. Perritt, b. 1839-d.1858, unmarried. --- a grandson, (John Perry Peritt's son,) George Washington Perritt, b.March 20, 1870--d.July 2, 1871 (as a baby). Several former Perritt slaves, including Landers Perritt, Moses Perritt, Tony Perritt, Wootson Perritt and Berry Perritt, are most likely buried there. They were raised with Perritt family and resided there most of their lives after gaining their freedom from slavery. (family note: Burrel's son, John Perry Perritt, b. May 11, 1830 --.Oct. 6, 1895 is buried in nearby Concord Bapt. Ch. Cemetery. His first wife, Artamalissa Alexander (Milly) Perritt, b. 1831--d. June 7, 1860, is buried in Alexander Cemetery, Salem. Her infant son, James Franklin, b. June 6, 1860, d. June 15, 1860, who lived only 9 days after his mother, Millie, had died of childbirth complications, is believed to also be buried beside his mother in the Alexander Cemetery, Salem. Their graves are unmarked. John Perritt's second wife, whom he married on May 12, 1869, Darcus Haynes Perritt, b.Dec. 12, 1847--d.Aug, 26, 1925 ,is buried beside her husband at Concord Baptist.
