Aiken County, S.C.
Sandhills, Thoroughbreds, & Cotton Mills
Early births and deaths were frequently recorded in the local county probate office. This practice was not consistent. It was a personal preference. South Carolina began issuing birth and death certificates January 1, 1915. You may find for those people born before that date they have a Delayed Birth Record. Those records will often contain affidavits of other people who were present at the time of birth or who know of the birth. Many of these early records were filed after the person was an adult.
Birth and Death Certificates are available from the Vital Records Division of the SC Department of Health & Environmental Control (SC DHEC). The SC DHEC website provides information on the Vital Records it manages and how to obtain a certified copy of a birth certificate. Aiken County Health Cepartment, the local DHEC office, located at 222 Beaufort St NE, Aiken, provides copies of birth and death certificates. The County Coroner's office provides specific information on death certificates.
Marriage Certificates are also available through DHEC for marriages between July 1950 and December 2021. Marriages before or after are only available though the county probate court.
