of Part of the 23rd Regiment praying that they may be
divided into an additional Company. This document was found
at the South Carolina Department of Archives. Microfilm
"ND-4616-01". This petition was undated but is believed to
have been written ca. 1812.
To the Honorable the President and Members
of the Senate The petition of the undersigned of the 2nd
Battallion 23rd Regiment of South Carolina Militia Barnwell
District Sheweth that they are at present labouring under a
considerable degree of inconvenience owing to the immence
distant that they have to go for the purpose of discharging
militia duty in their ordinary musters And they further shew
to your Honor that there ar three companies in said
Battallion out of which may be composed a fourth without
either company below the number men required by law. Which
will be to the satisfaction of the commanding officers of
said companies and to the convenience of the said
petitioners. We therefore humbly pray that your Honors may
take your petitioners case into consideration and grant them
such uses as to your Honors shall see merit. And in duty
bound your petitioners will ever pray
