This cemetery is located in the Colston Community of Bamberg County, South Carolina,
just across Indian Camp Branch from the home of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Valentine McMillan,
Bamberg County, S.C. Mary Adaline McMillan, the 28 year old daughter of Captain Henry William McMillan
and Sophia ("So-Fi-Yah") Delilah Faust, was the first member of the McMillan
family to be buried in Shady Rest Cemetery on June 27, 1856. Seven of their fifteen
children are buried in Shady Rest.
It has been said by the old ones, that at the time Mary Adaline McMillan died,
Indian Camp Branch was flooded. Captain McMillan claimed that due to the flooded
condition, he could not get the body across the stream so that she could be buried in the
James McMillan Cemetery.
Of Capt. & Mrs. McMillan's eight sons, six fought in the War between the States.
Two of their sons who fought are buried in the Old Union Methodist Ch. Cemetery, near
Cope, S.C. Capt William Franklin McMillan and Sgt. Carey Columbus McMillan.
Two tombstones are in memory of McMillans not buried there. Lt. Lawrence Pinckney
"Pink" McMillan killed in the War Between the States., in the trenches around
Petersburg, VA. Mrs. Frances Marion Pate Kirkland Weintraub There are four graves which are not McMillan, three of these person closely related
to the McMillans. Mrs. Estelle C. Carroll, b. 27 May 1894, d. 23 Apr 1960, mother-in-law of Emily
McMillan Carroll. Emily's Husband Harry Carroll is buried in the James McMillan Cemetery. Mrs. Gertrude Rice Cutts, b. 24 Sep 1863, D. 13 May 1942, a sister of Hattie Florine
Rice McMillan. Miss Fannie Ophellia Rice, b, 12 Nov 1861, d. 1 Dec 1941, a sister of Hattie Florine
Rice McMillan. Ms. Laura M. McKercher, b. 12 Jan 1898, d. 3 Feb 1957,not related to the McMillans,
a nurse who helped nurse some of the Jennings descendants.
