Vital Records
  • Marriage Records:  State law did not require counties to record marriages until July of 1911.  Chesterfield County, SC marriage records are kept in the County Probate Office in the Chesterfield County Courthouse, 200 West Main Street, Chesterfield SC, 29709;  (843) 623-2376.  Most of the early marriage licenses are in storage and not available unless requested.
     
  • Birth and Death Certificates:  Birth and Death Certificates are available at DHEC Office of Vital Records, 2600 Bull Street, Columbia, SC  29201-1708; (803) 898-3630.  Death Certificates can be requested for individuals who have been deceased for over 50 years and specific information is required.  Follow the above link, which provides information on who can request a birth and/or death certificate with on-line forms and directions. 

    The South Carolina Department of Archives and History also has microfilm copies of Death Certificates.   The cost is less expensive through the Archives.
  • Probate Records:  Chesterfield County probate records begin in 1865, due to the burning of the courthouse.  The Probate Office has the records beginning roughly in 1900.  Records prior to that time are maintained at The South Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia, SC.
