Col. James R. BETHEA (1809-1878)

BETHEA, James R. (1809-1878)
Born August 23, 1809 in that part of old Marion County which later became Dillon County, he was the son of Philip Bethea (1781-1865), who served in the South Carolina State Senate 1800-1802.

James R. Bethea, following his father's commitment to public service, served as Representative in the South Carolina State Legislature 1848-1850.

During the War Between the States, he served in the 23rd Regiment, South Carolina, Confederate States Army, attaining the rank of Colonel.

Interment at Dothan Cemetery, Dillon County, South Carolina. His wife, Mary Catherine McLeod Bethea (1815-1883) is buried beside him.
