Mt. Zion originated 1864 in a log building which stood where the
South of the Border enterprises are now located. In 1874, land was
purchased about one mile from this site and a new building erected with
a seating capacity of 200 people. This building is still standing. The
early records have been lost, but there were 129 members in 1887. As
the church is so close to the state’s upper boundary, a large part of the
congregation live in Robeson County, North Carolina. First belonging to
the Pee Dee Baptist Association, in 1887 the church changed to the
Robeson Association.
