SMITH Home
West of Smithboro, South of Buck Swamp
Contributed by Philip M. PRICE
Probably built in the late 1700's or early 1800's. John Smith IV (b abt 1710.
d abt 1802) m 10-4-1734 to Abigail Commander (b 1717, d abt 1742)
probably built the home. I walked thru this home in the 1980's. It
was straight and plumb, built with hand-hewn hart pine beams, with
bored pegs to hold the beams together. It had two massive interior
chimneys made out of hand made bricks. What struck me as unusual was
that there were no rotten boards or beams, and how straight all the
corners were. The house sat near the railroad and was probably burned
down by vagrants more than 10 years ago. I remember the front porch
different from the photo, perhaps it had deteriorated and had been torn
off. Dal Fore, a decendent who lives within sight of the Old Smith
Home, sent me this picture. If you have any information on the Smith
Home please let me know. I would like to give my relatives more info
and history about the Home.
