Death Claims Mrs. Alice Jackson

Mrs. Alice Cordelia Hayes Jackson, widow of Sidney Warren Jackson, passed away at her home Sunday afternoon at 1:45, after an illness of nearly a year. Mrs. Jackson was the daughter of John C. Hayes and Mary Ann Stubbs Hayes and was born August 29th, 1857, at the old home plantation near Latta where have been reared five generations of the John C. Hayes names. She was the granddaughter of John C. Hayes, the Revolutionary patriot, carrying an inheritance of that forefather in the bravery of her last words "I am not afraid to die."

Happy in the devotion of her family who had all planned, though in widely separated states, to be with her for the celebration on next Sunday of her 80th birthday, and loving life and desirous of regaining health, when she knew the end was near she faced it fearlessly, characteristic of one who had lived so close to her God in her unselfish like, full of good deeds, and devotion to her church.

Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were married in 1879 and lived for several years on there plantation near Catfish Baptist church, the places of their birth, and later moved to Dillon to educate their children. They were among the Poona settlers of the town.

Mrs. Jackson loved to have her friends around her, and her kindness was far reaching as was attested by those of all walks of life who came to the home to pay tribute to her memory. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 from the First Baptist church and were conducted by the pastor, Dr. J. A. Ward, assisted by Rev. G. E. Edwards, who led in prayer and read the twenty-third psalm. Dr. Ward read from a portion of the twenty-first chapter of Revelation and paid a beautiful tribute to Mrs. Jackson and is thoughts of her desire to live, to be well and of her fearlessness of death.

Music was rendered by the Choral Club of the St. Cecilia Music Club and a solo, "The Old Rugged Cross" by Rudolph Jones.

Interment was in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery. The mound and casket were covered with a magnificent display of floral tributes.

Mrs. Jackson is survived by two brothers, John C. Hayes and Henry Hayes, one son, Liston Jackson of Fort Worth, Texas; five daughters, Mrs. J. F. DeWitt, Columbia; Mrs. George MacLeod, New York; Mrs. S. H. Turner, Hamlet; Mrs. Charlie C. Haynes, Durham and Miss Lacy Jackson, Dillon; eight grandchildren, Katheryn and Mary Cecile DeWitt, Columbia; Marjorie Mae and Nina Jackson MacLeod, New York; Winnie Davie and Mary Alice Turner, Hamlet; Hazel and Charles C. Haynes Jr., of Durham.
