William Jackson Killed By Train
Body Found on A. C. L. Tracks Near Dillon Sunday Morning

William Jackson, 23 year-old son of Lawrence Jackson, was killed early Sunday morning by an Atlantic Coast Line Train. Thr body was found in a ditch near the railroad tracks at a road crossing near Exeau Page place three miles south of Dillon.

Young Jackson was in Latta Saturday night. An officer advised him to go home and Jackson left town. Later the officer had occasion to come to Dilon and saw Jackson on the highway. That was about 11 o'clock.

Jackson lived on the Luther Rogers plantation and the evidence at the coroner's inquest indicated that he was attemping to cross the railroad tracks when he sat down on the end of a cross tie. Imprints of coat buttons on the ground also indicated that he might have laid down near the ctosstie during the night.

Evidently he was sitting on the end of a crosstie when the train struck him. One arm was mangled and one side of the body was crushed. He was hurled for a distance of 53 feet into a ditch.

Many trains pass over the Coast Line tracks in the early morning hours and there was no evidence to show which train struck young Jackson. Evidently the engineer of the train did not see Jackson on the track and was unaware of the tragedy. The body was discovered early Sunday morning by the engineer of a northbound train. The engineer stopped his train at the tower and reported the accident.

Coroner Gasque held an inquest and the verdict of the jury was that Jackson came to his death by being struct by an Atlantic Coast Line train.

Mr. Jackson is survived by a widow and several children.
