FORMER FLORENTINE Dr Kyle Haselden, Eminent Church Magazine Editor, Dies

Kyle E Haselden, 55, Editor of "The Christian Century" and a former Florentine died Wednesday at his home in Evanston, Ill.

Dr Haselden, one of the nation's most distinguished ministers, was a native of Latta and spent the early part of his life in Florence where he graduated from McClenaghan High School in 1930. He was a son of the late H B and Mary Allen Haselden.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 am Monday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence with Dr Edward L Byrd officiating. Earlier services will be held in Evanston.

He is the author of three books--"The Racial Problem in Christian Perspective," "The Urgency of Preaching," and "The Death as a Myth." He was also a contributor to various journals.

He first joined the staff of "The Christian Century" as managing editor, after holding pastorates at such churches as First Baptist Church, Minneapolis, Minn; Baptist Temple, Rochester, NY., and First Baptist Church of Charleston, West Va. Four years ago he became editor of "The Christian Century."

Dr Haselden was one of the speakers scheduled to be in Florence as part of the People-to-People program last year, but was unable to attend. His talk was delivered by his wife, the former Miss Elizabeth Lee, who was a native of Florence, daughter of the late T O Lee.

Dr Haselden was a Rauschenbusch lecturer, Colgate Rochester Divinity School, 1958; and was a professor of homiletics, Garrett Technological Seminary, 1960, 1962, and 1966.

He received a B A degree from Furman University in Greenville in 1943 and a B D degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, NY in 1937.

He holds an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Morris Harvey College, Charleston, W Va.; an honorary degree of Doctor of Langs, Keuka College, Keula, NY., and an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters, Chicago Theological Seminary, Chicago, Ill.

He is listed in "Who's Who" in America.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Mrs Alice H Lane of Rochester, NY.; two sons, Kyle E Haselden, II of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Thomas Lee Haselden of Evanston, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs Mildred H Finklea of Pamplico, and Mrs Aileen Dail of Buffalo, NY; a brother, Clyde Haselden of Easton, Pa., and two grandchildren.

The body will arrive in Florence early Sunday morning and friends may call on the family at the Waters Funeral Home from 5 pm to 7 pm on Sunday evening.
