Researching several early Edgefield surnames, most of which have more questions than answers. Believe my Richard Ivey Taylor, (b. 1799 SC, per 1850 Coffee Co. AL census, with children born SC in 1832 and land transactions in AL by 1834) was a son of Leroy Taylor of Edgefield, probable son of Nery/Avery Taylor of SC. Can anyone clarify this? Also descend from Robert Mosely & wife Penelope Talley of Edgefield. Their daughter Penelope Moseley b. 21 Feb 1788 Edgefield, SC married John Thomas Copeland (b. 15 June 1784 VA) in SC. Had land records in Edgefield, then moved to Putnam Co. GA. Would like to share information with other Moseley/Talley/Copeland researchers. Am working on frustrating known to be SC lines for Holloway, Adams, Stanley, Watson, King, Creech, Cone, etc. of the late 1700s early 1800s whose descendants moved to southern AL before 1850, many via GA. Hunting information on Benjamin Lewis b. 1780-90 had son Benjamin Lewis b. Jan 1811 SC, moved to Henry Co. AL by 1820. The younger Benjamin Lewis married Anna Jane Creech, daughter of David Creech formerly of Barnwell, SC. Any suggestions or contact from fellow researchers would be appreciated.

My great-grandfather Henry Tanksley, an African American, was born in Edgefield, SC about 1868 I believe He moved to Screven County, GA in the late 1800s and married my great-grandmother Easter Brown. Their 1st child was born in 1900. His siblings are possibly named Ben, Joe, and Emma. There was a James Tansley listed in the 1870 census who had 2 sons named Henry. One of these sons was 2 yrs. old. I've found what I believe to be a definite find for my family on the 1880 Edgefield census. There is a Jim Tansley or Tanksley listed who has a son named Henry who is 14 years old. Henry's siblings listed as Ben, Emma and Mamie match information I received from Henry's only surviving son and oldest grandaughter. They both mentioned Edgefield relatives named Ben, Emma who was called Aunt Sissy and an Aunt Mame who I believe was Mamie. I believe I'm on the right track. The Jim Tanksley I've found lived in the Wise Township in Enumeration District 65. Thanks, Cynthia L. Wallace

My 5th great-grandfather was born around Dec. 25, 1763 near Hanging Rock, South Carolina. I do not have any information on his parents, brothers and sisters or even his first wife. A few years ago I found in the Edgefield county records a legal journal that contained the name of Amity Hubbs who sued a man for assault but the case was dismissed. I am thinking that this Amity could be his first wife or maybe a sister or mother. Does any one have any information on Amity Hubbs or who John's parents were or any of the sibblings?

Trying to confirm some things: Jacob Watson I (bef. 1782 - aft. 1811) born in Edgefield Dist., SC, prob. died in TN moved to Pulaski Co., GA about 1811 and then moved to TN soon afterwards It seems obvious that Jacob is descended from John Watson (1718 - 1791). Whether he is John's son Jacob (b. c. 1745) or his grandson Jacob through his son Willis Murphy Watson is not clear. Jacob I's son Jacob Watson II (c. 1794 - aft. 1850) was born in Edgefield Co. and died in Houston Co., GA He remained in Pulaski Co. for most of his life after 1811. He named one of his sons Willis M. Watson, establishing the apparent connection. Surnames: TILLERY THURMAN THURMOND
Submitter: Vickie Rushton Bickle (vbickle@seacove.net)
Date: 17 Feb 2000

I'm trying to establish my TILLERY line back from Richard TILLERY, b. ca 1783 SC (Edgefield Co.?), d. Sep/Oct 1860 Butler Co., AL and m. Frances? b. ca 1790 NC/SC, in Edgefield Co., SC. At the present time I do not know who his parents or siblings were. Based on research that a cousin of mine had someone do for her in Edgefield Co., SC, some years ago, I have determined that the probable lineage of my Richard TILLERY goes like this: Richard>William, b. 14 Jul 1754 Richmond Co., VA and wife, Rachel>Willoughby, b. 7 Apr 1725 Richmond Co., VA and wife, Margaret>Richard, b. 12 Aug 1688 Richmond Co., VA and wife, Elizabeth>Charles and wife, Eleanor. The children of Willoughbly TILLERY and wife, Margaret, are listed on the North Farnham Parish, VA, Registry, as are the children of Richard TILLERY and wife, Elizabeth. The children of Willoughby and Margaret TILLERY were William b. 14 Jul 1754; John b. 1 May 1757; Elizabeth b. 12 Jun 1760; and Katherine b. 7 Jun 1766. The children of Richard and Elizabeth TILLERY were Thomas b. 25 Mar 1718; John b. 2 Aug 1720; Anne b. 18 Aug 1722; and Willoughby b. 7 Apr 1725. The only child listed for Charles and Eleanor TILLERY is Richard. I know that Willoughby TILLERY and his son, William, were in Edgefield Co., SC in the late 1700s and early 1800s. There was a John TILLERY, m. Agnes Thurman/Thurmond, in Edgefield County, SC, and later in Greenwood Co., SC. He may be the brother to William TILLERY and s/o Willoughby, but I won't know that until I can find out when this John was born. I don't know the names of any of the children of William and Rachel TILLERY and at this point I am only assuming that my Richard is their son. This John TILLERY may be their son, too. There was also a William TILLERY, Sr. and a William TILLERY listed in the deed books of Edgefield County, SC. I have not determined if the William TILLERY that I think is my Richard's father was the Sr. or the Jr. There was also an Eppey TILLERY and wife, Violet, from North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., VA in Edgefield Co., SC. They had two daughters listed on the North Farnham Parish Registry, Judith Conway TILLERY b. 10 Sep 1775 and an unknown daughter b. 26 Nov 1777. The interesting piece of this puzzle that I've just found out recently is that Richard TILLERY, b. 12 Aug 1688, was listed as a cousin in the will of Job TILLERY, s/o of Henry or John TILLERY. I got this info out of the Milton Jared TILLERY book by Edgar C. TILLERY, 1961. Look forward to hearing from anyone who can help me solve this mystery of who Richard TILLERYs parents/siblings were. Thanks. Vickie

Searching for a marriage record between Elizabeth Randolph and a Baker (James or Thomas) in the 1780's or 1790's. Elizabeth was most likely the daughter of George Randolph of the Old 96th District and her husband may have been the son of Charles Baker. Would appreciate any information about these two families of Old 96th District. Thank you. Elizabeth Baker
