Surnames: SCRUGGS ELAM SERUGGS
Submitter: James Scruggs (JScrugsGen@webtv.net)
Date: 10 Dec 2000

Ancestor:Jesse Scruggs, first colonial land grants about 1768 at Reedy River. Lieutenant in Rev War for Edgefield District. Bought land near town of Edgefield. 1790 and 1800 Census. We know his two sons and two daughters: wife was Easter or Hester. His son, Matt Scruggs married Mary Elam d/o of John Elam of Edgefield Co. Family group relocated about 1807 to Cape Girardeau, Co, MO. Jesse probably died there. We assume he came from Virginia but I wonder if he was a son of William Seruggs of Camden,SC (Landowner, 1755) Many other Scruggs came to South Carolina but we have no firm family connections. I do not believe he is the Jesse Scruggs of Augusta, Georgia who lived about that time nor do I have any belief that he is the Jesse Scruggs of the Dunklin Book born 1747. I do believe that he came down in a family group and that he has relatives married into local families but I have never found any marriages. I am interested in all South Carolina Scruggs before 1800. I'm a member of the Scruggs Family Association and would be happy to correspond about it.

They are on Joseph Winfrey's death certificate. His children were: Emmie Lee, Edwin Valet, Otto, Thomas Curry, Howell Burts, Elfreda (my grandmother), Netta, Rupert W., Victor Patrick, Joseph Jackson and Wilbur Lewis Taylor. Looking for descendants of John TRAYLOR, b. ca. 1768, son of Joseph and Elizabeth TRAYLOR of Brunswick, VA, Caswell, NC, and other points unknown. John appeared as John TAYLOR on the 1790 Caswell, NC census, along with his father, who was also misrecorded or transcribed as TAYLOR (Joseph TRAYLOR was recorded in court records and on the 1784 Tax List there, and I am sure these are the same two men in 1790.) John and some of his siblings may have been in GA bef. John moved to Edgefield, SC (known siblings were Edward, Thomas, Elizabeth MEANLEY/MEANLY/MANLEY/MANDLEY), Martha, William, Joseph, Sarah "Sallie" (CROOK.) John's sister and brother-in-law, William and Martha Traylor HOWERTON moved to Edgefield about 1802 so (William's brother d. in Edgefield in 1805.) In 1819, William HOWERTON died, and Martha and William's son, Joel HOWERTON sold his father's land to John TRAYLOR before moving out to Alabama. However, John TRAYLOR was not there by 1830, as far as I can determine. Where was John? Could he also have been recorded as TAYLOR in SC, or did he move on to another place? Any help with these families (who were tied to the CURRY & ROPER families of this county)would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ROBINSON/RAYMOND/FELL. Seeking descendants of John Robinson Sr. and his wife Lucy Fell who moved from Fell's Point in Maryland to Edgefield District, S.C. prior to the American Revolution. After John Sr. died, his widow Lucy married a Mr. Maury and moved to Pennsylvania with some of the Robinson children: William, Jeremiah, and James. The son John Robinson Jr. remained in Edgefield. John Jr. later (ca.1807- 1808) moved to Mississippi settling in Claiborne County. He died there 10 October 1808. We know that John Robinson Jr. married Mary Raymond in Edgefield. (Mary died in Edgefield October 1799 and John Jr. married a 2nd time to Sarah Bassett Edwards.) I have a list and birthdates of the children of John Robinson, Jr. (children by both wives) taken from his Bible that was carried to Mississippi when he migrated there. I believe my gg- grandfather may have been a descendant of John Robinson Jr. My gg-grandfather was William Osmus Robinson born in 1825 in Morgan County, Georgia. He had a son, W.O. Robinson who named one of his sons Raymond Robinson. I know of no other direction in the family that would have the name Raymond in it. I would be interested in any information that might shed light on the family name of ROBINSON OR RAYMOND that originates from the Edgefield District of S.C. I would especially be interested in the family of William Fell Robinson (b. 1 December 1785) who married Eliza Hutchinson. William Fell Robinson was a son of John Robinson, Jr.,who may have moved to Georgia. Names of all the children of John Robinson,Jr. and Mary Raymond are: Rebecca b. 1766 married Henry Tillman; Elizabeth b. 1768 m. Joel Bassie or Dossie; Raymond Robinson b. 1771 m. Hannah B. Hicks in MS; John Robinson III b. 1773 m. Nancy Collins dau. of Moses Collins; James b. 1776 m. Betsy Bugg moved to Alabama; Mary b. 1780 w.1st William Knight 2nd ____Fell; Jeremiah b. 1783 d. as a child in Edgefield; William Fell Robinson b. 1785 m. Eliza Hutchinson; Lucy b. 1788 m. James Johns in MS; Benjamin b. 1790 m.Lavina Taylor; Nancy b. 1794 m. Elijah Clark. The following children were born to 2nd wife Sarah Bassett Edwards Robinson: Twins: Jeremiah Smith Robinson b. 1807 and Alfred Bassett Robinson b. 1807. Sarah Bassett Edwards Robinson also had a daughter from her 1st marriage to James Edwards--her name was Sara Edwards and she m. Samuel E. Davis in Mississippi. Anyone wanting more information on this family, I refer to The Leonardo Andrea Collection on Microfilm. It contains the lifetime genealogical notes of this famous genealogist of the 1940-50 era. Many libraries and archives have this collection. I viewed it at the Alabama Room in Calhoun Co. Library in Anniston, Alabama. It is also at the Georgia State Archives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Seeking credible leads to documentation re: the estate of BENJAMIN TUTT who married BARBARA STALNAKER. Benjamin was my 5G Grandfather and was a prominent citizen of Edgefield Co. from 1768 until his death in April 1790. I have seen unsourced references to a will dated 7 Sept 1790, but I have not been able to find any will for Benjamin. In fact, there may be no will because the unsourced material goes on to name Benjamin's brother, GABRIEL TUTT, and son-in-law, EDMUND MARTIN as "administrators" of the estate rather than "executors" as would be the case if there was a will. The 7 Sept 1790 may have been the date Letters of Administration were requested or granted, or perhaps it is the date when an estate inventory was ordered. Reportedly, the widow and son-in-law purchased from the estate on 15 June 1791. Such specific information suggests that there are official records regarding the estate somewhere, but I cannot find them. Any help will be deeply appreciated. As a matter of interest, less than two weeks before Benjamin's death, he and wife Barbara sold over 5,500 acres of land to a THOMAS BACON.

I was given the family information for my father side and have some questions. Here it says Toliver Bostick died 28 Jan 1813 in Edgefield, Edgefield Co., SC. He was married to Anne [Davis] Moore. Their child is Nancy Ann Moore. Is anyone researching these lines? Is Nancy Ann an illigitmate child[the reason for the confused last names]? Would like to talk to some cousins. Smiles!
