Death records for Charlestown list a female BELISLE child, a mulatto, circa 1780. PETER BELLEISLE was listed on the Charleston censuses of 1800 and 1810 with younger male(s) in the house hold. MARTIN BELISLE ( who later sometimes spells his name Belleisle , like some of his descendants) is on an 1819 deed in Edgefield county and on the 1820 census in Edgefield Co. with an adult female and a child. Martin moved on to Georgia. Does anybody know more about any of these people ? Are they connected? How?

Searching for ancestors of Julius Tilman C. HOLSTON, born c 1820, in S.C., according to the 1850 Dallas Co. Ala. cencus and the 1870 Choctaw Co. Ala. census. The only Holstons in the appropriate census records for S.C. were in Edgefield, all named William or Moses. There is a William HOLSTON in the 1830 Dallas Co. Ala. census, but that isn't proof of anything. Would really love to hear from anybody researching HOLSTON.

HUBBARD and GOLDMAN. I am searching for information on either of these two names in Edgefield County in the late 1700's or early 1800's. My great-grandfather was Andrew Goldman. He was born in Tennessee in 1833. In 1850 he was living with a Clara Hubbard, age 69, in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Clara was the widow of Dempsey Hubbard. Both Dempsey and Clara were from Edgefield, I believe. A picture we have of Andrew has a note that says his grandmother was a Hubbard, but we know nothing about his parents. I know there were Goldmans in Edgefield in the early 1800's but other than that we are at a stand still. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am really struggling with my HOLMES line. I have traced it so far to Lebud HOLMES, b. abt. 1836, SC m. Ann V. Unknown, d. January 23, 1880, Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. Children: Richard Marion HOLMES, Lilla HOLMES, several that died as babies. Recently I came across this in a book: John HOLMES m. Harriett MITCHELL, July 29, 1830, Harmony Methodist Church, Edgefield District, SC. I have reason to believe that these may be Lebud's parents. A Mrs. Harriet HOLMES is buried with Lebud. Her birth year would be abt. 1809 which would work with the marriage date. Edgefield District, SC is also right across the state line from Richmond County, GA. Also a Joseph MITCHELL, age 19, b. in SC is living with Harriet HOLMES on the 1860 Richmond Co census which could be her nephew. I also recently found a William HOLMES, b. abt. 1800 in SC in Richmond Co, GA in the 1850 census. He was married to a Henrietta ? A Mrs. Henrietta WOODRUFF (possibly second marriage?) is also buried with Lebud HOLMES in Augusta. Are John and William brothers from Edgefield District, SC? Are John and Harriet Mitchell HOLMES the parents of Lebud HOLMES? I would appreciate any help with these HOLMES' and also with the MITCHELL line.

Lynn Fraser 11/17/98

Surnames: FRASER
Lynn is researching the FRASER's and here is the information she shared in a note:.

John Fraser was born about 1730 somewhere in Scotland. In 1754 he married
Lydia Riddle in Culpepper County, Virginia. John Fraser died in 1799 in the E
dgefield District of South Carolina. The children of John and Lydia Fraser
were:

Ann Nancy born around 1756
Rosannah born around 1765
James born April 10, 1767
William born around 1768
Jesse born around March 1772
Margaret born around 1773
Benjamin born around 1775
Mary born around 1778
John born 1778-1782
Elizabeth born around 1780

Here's the rest of what I know:

Thomas J. Fraser married Elizabeth Burroughs. They had at least two sons.
....James Madison Fraser born May 18, 1842 in Edgefield, SC and died February 21, 1913 in Bostwick, FL.
....Clemon C. Fraser born 1847 in Marion County, SC (This is the assumed relationship--we have copies of Civil War Pensioners information in James and Clemon's handwriting and vouching for one another).

James Madison Fraser married Francis Marion Silcox on June 14, 1871. Francis
was born March 8, 1853 and died December 7, 1890......and I have the rest.

Anyhow, I'm assuming Thomas was born around 1815 to one of the sons above,
but I don't know which.  If you can help Lynn, please contact her. Thanks

Surnames: HANCOCK, JONES
I am seeking information on the John HANCOCK, Senr. family in
Edgefield Dist. He was married to Ann HANCOCK. He deeded 166 1/2 acres
to his son Peter HANCOCK in 1827. Peter's will lists his "imputed" heirs
Mary (Polly) JONES FLOYD, Frances JONES WHEELER, James JONES,
Peter JONES, Hixey JONES BANDEN and Tellita (or Tabitha) JONES,
and George W. JONES and their mother Elizabeth JONES.
Later, in 1857, Geo. W. HANCOCK, petitions Edgefield to adminsiter his
mother's, Elizabeth HANCOCK, estate. It lists the above children,
except with HANCOCK surnames and includes one more--Thomas HANCOCK.
I believe the Geo. W. and Thomas moved to AR abt 1849-50 and Frances
moved to GA. I would appreciate ANY information pertaining to this

William Hill 12/11/97

Surnames: HARDEN
Seeking ancestry of William HARDEN who died intestate in Edgefield Dist., SC on Nov 3, 1813 leaving widow and 7 surviving children. His widow was Sarah "Sallie" Harden, sister of Rev. Samuel MARSH. Sarah had a daughter from a previous marriage to Robert GARDNER named Ann, who married Benjamin DRUMMOND. Sarah was probably not the mother of any of William's children. Children of William HARDEN living at time of final settlement of his estate in 1817 were: William C. Harden (referred to as "the younger," Henry G. Harden (a minor under age of 21), Priscilla who married Marshall PITTMAN, Rachel who married Jefferson (Jeffrey) PITTMAN, Elizabeth who married Daniel MARSHALL, Sinah who married Robert LOFTON, and Mary who married John MCDANIEL. Priscilla, Rachel, Elizabeth along with their husbands and Henry G. Harden were living in Georgia at the time of the final settlement of estate of William Harden. William Harden had sizeable estate including tracts of land on Stevens Creek and Horns Creek in Edgefield Dist. Prior to his marriage to Sarah GARDNER, William Harden married Margaret RYAN, widow of Lacon RYAN. William and Margaret married in July 1787. William Harden's daughter, Sinah Lofton was old enough to have a child born in 1791. Therefore, Margaret Ryan Harden could not have been Sinah's mother. What was the name of William Harden's earlier wife, the mother of Sinah? Jack Pittman of Menifee, CA reports that he found the name, "Elmira" written in pencil in a book on the Marshall PITTMAN family as the name of William Harden's wife. William Harden served as admin. of estate of a John HARDEN in Edgefield Dist. in 1802. Robert LOFTON and John MCDANIEL, sons-in-law of William Harden appear to have received distributions from the estate of John Harden. What relationship was this John Harden to William Harden? William Harden made several trips to Richmon (Richmond Co. GA) court and to the Worronton (Warren Co., GA) court to take care of business of the estate.

It may be the same one, or it could be his father or grandfather, as there is a George Smith also in 1716, 1717, and 1764 (with no township listed for any of the three).
