Date: 28 Oct 1999

William HOWERTON & Martha TRAYLOR moved to Edgefield, SC sometime about 1800, where William died in 1819. Martha and her eldest son, Joel HOWERTON sold their Edgefield property on Stevens [Stephens?] Creek adjacent Covington HARDY, Leroy COVINGTON and Lewis CURRY to John TRAYLOR. William HOWERTON's brother, James HOWERTON, d. in Edgefield in 1805, leaving his estate to be divided between the children of his deceased sister, Nancy Howerton PHENIX [PINNIX, PHEONIX] and two of William & Martha Traylor HOWERTON's children, including Joel. Other surnames closely associated with this family in both VA & SC were ROPER and QUARLES [or QUALLS.] The Howertons & Traylors & Ropers were in Brunswick Co., VA and Caswell Co., NC before SC. The Howertons, and perhaps the Ropers, moved on to AL & then MS; the Currys and the Quarles appear to have remained in Edgefield and other parts of SC. I am not sure of the relationship of the COVINGTON men to any of the others, although the Howertons and Covingtons started out together in Essex Co., VA, and Covington HARDY may be the same man as the one found in the Lunenburg Tithe lists in the 1770's. Does anyone have any documents containing any of these persons to share? Anyone have children or knowledge of the eventual home of John TRAYLOR? Thanks! Pam pamstone@digital.net

According to the Biographical Directory of SC House of Representatives, Vol IV (1791-1815) Samuel Walker, Sr. represented Edgefield in the Twelfth General Assembly (1796-1797). He had land on Shaw's Creek and Beaverdam Creek. He was among the incorporators of Horn's Creek Baptist Church and was a Justice of the Peace for Edgefield (1801). This Samuel's wife was Martha Jefferson Bell, d.o. Benjamin Bell and his only son was Samuel Walker, Jr., who represented Edgefield in the Nineteenth (1810-1812) and Twentieth (1812-1813) General Assembly. Samuel, Jr. served as a militia major about 1812. He married Fanny Eddins, d.o. Benjamin Eddins. I'm hoping to find other researchers interested in these two Samuel Walkers. Seeking information on Andrew Posey who left Edgefield County sometime between 1790 and 1800 and went to Georgia. Also seeking info on David Berryhill Posey. Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for information on John Terry. He was the son of James Terry and Elizabeth Gooch. John Terry was probably born in Granville Co. NC between 1835 and 1848 and died in SC. Thought to have many heirs in the Edgefield Co. area.
