Virginia Ellen Rush TorrenceSource of submission: The State newspaper Surname: TORRENCE, RUSH, WILSON, SHEALY, PLATT, SHARPE, BOUKNIGHT, DABNEY The following 1947 obituary is submitted verbatim: "Mrs. Virginia Ellen Rush Torrence, 84, died early yesterday morning at her residence, 500 Meeting Street, West Columbia, after an extended illness. Mrs. Torrence was born June 13, 1863, the daughter of John Rush and Barbara Ellen Wilson in the Bear Creek section of Kershaw County. She spent her adult life in West Columbia, and was active in church work and in aiding the sick and underprivileged. Survivors include three daughters, Miss Clara Torrence of West Columbia, Mrs. A. Wilmot Shealy of West Columbia, and Mrs. James L.(Bert) Platt of Eau Claire; two sons, L.w. Torrence-Sharpe of Columbia and C.C. Torrence of Richland County; 26 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o'clock this morning from St. Peter's catholic church by Monsignor Martin C. Murphy. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be six grandsons: Wilmot Shealy, Matthew Bouknight, Dewey Sharpe, Lester Bouknight, Silas Torrence and Ted Dabney. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. C.L. Kibler, Dr. T.C. Whetsell, Dr. J.R. Rosier, Gary Paschal, W.A. Hook, W.A. Pooser, C.O. Gamble, Earl Williams, J.C. Sons, Carlisle Perry, Lemuel Hall, Ed shull, Mike Bouknight, and W.W. Stillinger.
