POLLOCK, William Pegues, a Senator from South Carolina; born near Cheraw, Chesterfield County, S.C., December 9, 1870; attended private and public schools and the University of South Carolina at Columbia; was graduated from the law department of that university in 1891; served as clerk of the Committee on the District of Columbia in the House of Representatives 1891-1893; was admitted to the bar in 1893 and commenced practice in Cheraw, S.C.; also engaged in agricultural pursuits; member of the State house of representatives 1894-1898; delegate to most State and county conventions from Chesterfield County 1894-1922; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Bryan and Stevenson in 1900; again elected to the State house of representatives in 1902, 1904, and 1906; unsuccessful candidate for election to the Sixty-second Congress; delegate to the Democratic National Convention at St. Louis in 1916; chairman of the Democratic State convention in 1918; elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Benjamin R. Tillman and served from November 6, 1918, to March 3, 1919; resumed the practice of law in Cheraw, S.C., and died there June 2, 1922; interment in St. David's Cemetery.
