BELLOTTE, etc.
Looking for the following surnames in McCormick (then
Abbeville) County, early 1800s: BELLOTTE, BRANSCOME, DEFOOR/DEFORD, GUILLEBEAU,
HARWICK,LEGARD, LEROY, MCMASTER, THORNTON, TOWNS. Many of these names were
in the Mt Carmel area. Especially interested in how the DEFORDS and BRANSCOMES
might fit together. Also, seeing as how the English and Huguenot French
seemed to intermarry to some degree, what church would these mixed families
have been likely to go to? Thanks for any help.

HEMPHILL
In the 1790 Census on page 57 for Old Ninety-Six District,
Abbeville Co., SC is listed an Isabel McCleskey:
Colhoun, Capt. Jos[eph] 1 1 4 0 3
McNeal, John 1 0 0 0 0
Deal, Will[ia]m Senr. 1 2 3 0 0
Morrow, Hugh 1 0 1 0 0
Williams, James 1 2 1 0 0
Mercer, Robert 2 2 7 0 1
Berrey [Berry], William 1 0 1 0 0
McMullin, Revd. Peter 4 1 5 0 3
Simpson, John 2 4 3 0 0
*McCleskey, Isbel (sic) 1 1 2 0 0 < * * *
Dunlap, W[illia]m 1 0 7 0 0
McClaskey, W[illia]m 1 1 2 0 0
Pettigrew, Ebenez[e]r 2 2 3 0 8
Calhoun, Hugh 3 0 2 0 0
Noble, James 1 1 3 0 11
All: M 16+, M 16-, F, Other, Slaves.
There is a division of opinion as to who this Isabel
is and who her other family members are who are listed with her. By the
names of those listed near her it appears that she lived in the midst of
our Lower Long Cane (or Hopewell) Presbyterian Church congregation. It
is my belief that a David in one of the branches of her McCleskey family
married a Mary Hemphill (1750/1760 VA or NC - 1780/1810 Elbert Co., GA).
Mary was the daughter of James Hemphill of the line known as the North
Carolina Hemphills. The other Hemphill line at this same Long Cane location
was the Hemphills whose widow Margaret Bates Clark Hemphill's Probate Notice
was posted at the Hopewell Presbyterian Church in "what is known as
the Calhoun Settlement on Long Cane and Little River". It was administered
6 Feb 1826 by William Hemphill, Alexander Houston and James Houston with
$8,000 bond. As far as I know no one has found a link between these two
Hemphill lines or my line. My line settled in Chester Co., SC in the 1790's
and did not come to the Long Cane Section until 1837.
If you have names, dates, relations, etc., for the
individuals enumerated in the Isabel entry in the 1790 Census please let
me hear from you.
