Confederate Veteran February
1922 A.L. SMITH was born in
York Co., S.C., Sept. 20, 1845. He entered the Confederate
States Army as a volunteer in 1863, and served until paroled
at Greensboro, N.C. under Joseph E. Johnston, April 26,
1865. His branch of service was the light artillery and he
served principally on the South Carolina coast. His command
followed that of Johnston to N.C. when pressed by Sherman, who
entered S.C. in 1865.
A.L. SMITH was
elected Commander of Omar R. Weaver Camp, U.V.C., No. 354,
January, 1920, and while serving his second term was called
by death on October 30, 1921.
He was
the father of 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. Of these,
DR. H.B. SMITH, E.V. SMITH, MRS. E.L. FARMER and MRS. E.R.
RUSSELL survive him.
He was a man
of sterling worth, honest in his dealings and stood for law
and order in the community; he was a member of the Methodist
Episcopal church, charitable, kind and gentle...peace to his
ashes !
