The Children of
Thomas and Mary Couch of Spartanburg
County South Carolina Contributed by
Calvin Dorris1. Thomas Couch Jr.
or III was born circa 1739 in Brunswick County Virginia.
He died about 1832 in Orange County North Carolina. He
appears in the census records of Orange County North Carolina. In
1800, 1810 and 1820 he listed his age as being over 45. In
1830 he is listed as being 90-100 years old. He left a
will naming his children. His sons where Samuel, Thomas,
Harden, Isaac, Jacob, William. Also named daughters Ann
Horne, Susannah Horne and named his grand daughter
Rachel White who may have been daughter of Elizabeth and
Joseph White.
Thomas was mentioned in his fathers
will written February 12, 1776 in 96 District of South
Carolina. “To my son Thomas one shilling
sterling.”
2. Judith Couch was born 1737-1742 in Brunswick
County Virginia. She died after 1810 in Spartanburg
County South Carolina. She was married to Christopher
Rhodes in Orange County North Carolina, circa 1757.
Judith was enumerated in the census records with her husband
in 1790, 1800 and 1810 in Spartanburg County South Carolina. In
1800 and 1810 she was listed as being over 45.
She was mentioned in her fathers will; “To my daughter
Judith one shilling sterling.” No last name was
mentioned for her.
3. Elizabeth Couch more than
likely was born between 1740 and 1750 probably in
Brunswick County Virginia. No information is known about
Elizabeth. She was mentioned in her fathers will; “To my daughter
Elizabeth one shilling sterling.” It can be assumed that
since, like her other brothers and sisters she was
married since she received the same as they did.
4. William Couch was more than likely born between 1740
and 1750 probably in Brunswick County Virginia. Not much
is known about William. He is mentioned in his fathers
will; “I give to my son William one shilling sterling”
It can be assumed that he was married at the time his
father wrote his will.
5. John Couch was born
1745-1750 probably in Brunswick County Virginia. He
married Nancy “Ann” Merideth circa 1772 in Spartanburg
County South Carolina. Like his sister Judith and their mother, John
and his wife are enumerated in the 1790 census listed in
the District of Captain Henry Merideth. By 1800 John and
his wife had moved to Greenville County South Carolina.
They later moved to Alabama where he was enumerated in
the 1830 census of Lawrence County Alabama and was 70-80
years old.
John was also mentioned in his fathers
will; “ I give to my well beloved son John Couch 150
acres of land where I now dwell.” John sells this land
to his brother Joseph in 1792. John is mentioned in the
land records of Spartanburg County South Carolina along with his
younger brothers in the 1790’s.
6. Martha “Patsy” Couch was born 1753-1755
possibly in Orange County North Carolina. She died in
1832 Spartanburg County South Carolina. She married Shadrack Waldrop
circa 1773 in Spartanburg County South Carolina. She and
her husband were enumerated in the 1790 census records
in Captain Henry Merideth District along with her
brother John and sister Judith and her mother Mary. In
1800 she was enumerated as being over 45. In 1810 she
was widowed and listed as head of household. In 1820 and 1830
census records she was living with her son Ira and was 70-80
years old in 1830. In 1801 she applied to be granted
administrator of the estate of her husband. Her brother
Drury Couch was one of the appraisers of the estate. She
had at least 10 children. Six daughters and four sons.
Three of the sons have been proven.
She was
mentioned in her fathers will “to my daughter Pattsy one
shilling sterling.” She was living with her parents when her father
Thomas Couch received a royal land grant for 300 acres.
She was 11-13 years of age at the time. She was married
when her father wrote his will.
7.
Joseph Couch was born 1750-1755 possibly in Orange County North
Carolina. Researchers give his date of birth as October 9,
1759. He is enumerated in the 1790 census of Henry
Merideth’s District in Spartanburg County South
Carolina. He was less than sixteen year of age when his
father received his royal land grant of 300 acres.
Joseph died in 1811 in Laurens County South Carolina. He was
mentioned in land records with his brothers John and Drury. His
brother Drury was an appraiser of his estate. His wife
Ann was administrator. After Joseph’s death his children
moved to Bedford County Tennessee and Franklin County
Georgia. His widow died in Bedford County Tennessee
October 30, 1840 and is believed to be buried in the
Couch family cemetery in Kellertown, Tennessee.
Joseph was mentioned in his father will; “ I give to my son Joseph
Couch one cow and calf, one ewe and lamb, one sow and pigs
and one feather bed.” This certainly seems like Joseph
was starting to set up house. Joseph was not married at
the time of his fathers will.
8. Drury Couch was
born circa 1760 in Orange County North Carolina. He was
enumerated in the 1800 census records as being under 45 (born
after 1755) and in 1810 was listed as being over 45 (born
before 1765). By 1820 he was enumerated in the census
records of Jasper County Georgia. He was still there in
1830 and 1840. These last two records would indicate
that he was born between 1760 and 1770.
When his
father received his land grant he was only a boy. Drury was
also mentioned in his fathers will where he was to receive the
remainder of his fathers land. He must have received this
land to help support his mother after his fathers death.
Drury was 16 years old when his father wrote his
will.
