Cantrell (Marion Co., Ala) am seized in all that Land situate in
Spartanburg Dist. and now or late in the possession of Reuben
Giles or occupation of Reuben Giles. Said William Cantrell
appoint Flelden Turner (Spartanburg Dist) my lawful
Attorney to sell my tract of Land of 461 acres more or less, on
the old Green River road in said Dist. Signed William Cantrell.
Acknowledged by William Cantrell 2 May 1838, in Pikeville to Edwin
G. Mosely Clerk of Marion Co., Ala. Court. Certification of
Edwin G. Mosely 2 May 1838 by John D. Terrell Judge of County
Court, Marion Co., Ala. Recorded in Book A, 123, page 134, at
office in Pikeville 2 May 1838. Signed Edwin G.

COMMENT: William
Cantrell married Fielden's sister Jane. William and family moved
to Marion County, Alabama sometime before May 1838. This is the
first indication we have of Fielden's profession - an Attorney
apparently following his Father, Henry. William has
requested
Fielden's legal services to sell his real estate in Spartanburg
County, SC. |

Spartanburg County} This indenture made this twenty-first
day of January in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven
Hundred and Ninety-two and the fifteenth year of American
Independence, between Drury Couch of the state and county aforesaid
and Benjamin Rhodes of said state and county. Witnesseth
that the said Drury Couch, for and in consideration of the sum
of forty pounds ten shillings sterling money to him in hand paid
by the said Benjamin Rhodes the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged hath bargained, sold, aliened, released, conveyed,
and confirmed unto the said Benjamin Rhodes and his heirs and
assigns forever all that plantation or tract of land containing one
hundred and fifty acres of land, it being part of a tract of 300
acres originally granted to Thomas Couch, deceased by his
excellency the right honorable Lord Charles G. Montague, Captain
General, Governor and then conveyed to the said Drury Couch by a
will. Situate, lying and being on both sides of the Fort
Shoal Creek together with every the appurtenances, belonging or in
any way appertaining to the said plantation, tract or piece of
one hundred fifty acres, hereditaments and premises above
mentioned and every part hereof unto the said Benjamin Rhodes,
his heirs, and assigns forever and the said Drury Couch, for
himself, his heirs, and assigns doth hereby covenanted, granted,
and agreed to and sold the said Benjamin Rhodes, his heirs and
assigns ne manner and form following that the said Drury Couch,
the above granted premises and appurtenances unto the said
Benjamin Rhodes, his heirs, and assigns from and against all
other persons claiming or to claim shall and will warrant and
forever defend by these presents. In witness whereof the
said parties whose presents have hereunto set their hands and seals
the day and year first above written. Signed, sealed, and

plantation or tract of land containing one hundred and sixty acres
more or less being part of three hundred acre tract originally
granted unto James Couch bearing date the ninth day of March
1773. Beginning on the north side of Enoree at the Sandy
Ford turning along the original line to the land I sold Adam
Farmch then along that conditional line to a box oak corner then
along the original line to the land I sold to William Cammel then
along the said William Cammel’s fence now thence unto the small
branch thence down said branch to the mouth thence up Enoree
River to the beginning with all the gardens, houses, orchards
appertaining and thereunto belonging I do hereby bargain and
sell unto Benjamin Couch, his heirs, executors, administrators
or assigns all the plantation or tract of land above mentioned
and I, John Couch, for my self, my heirs, executors,
administrators and assigns do hereby forever warrant and defend all
the plantation or tract of land above mentioned from all persons
whatsoever. In Witness where of I have hereunto set my
hand and seal this 27th day of October in the year of
our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and Seven.

land granted to Thomas Couch, thence North 30 W to a mulberry

these presents that I Levi Couch of said state and district in
consideration of the sum of Four Hundred and Twenty Five dollars
to me paid by Philemon W. Head of the state and district
aforesaid have granted, bargained, and sold, and by these presents
do grant, bargain, sell and release all that plantation or tract
of land, whereon I now live containing one hundred and seventy
acres more or less beginning on a stone running S82E40C40L to a
stake thence N8E34C60L to a stake thence N82W30CL to a stake on
the branch thence with the branch about N8E12C50 to a beach
thence N82W17 chains to a dead stump thence S8W30C to a stake
thence S11E16C70L to the beginning. Together with all and
singular the rights, members, heraditaments and appurtenances to
the said premises belonging or in anywise incident or
appertaining to have and to hold all and singular the premises
before mentioned unto the said Philemon W. Head, his heirs and

William Dobbins, Jr., 1765 - 1852, the son of William Sr., and
Prudence Hicks. William Dobbins, Sr had died in 1814 in
Rutherford County, NC; therefore, it is believed that William,
Jr was then perceived by the Attorney as Senior when he drafted
the Deed.
2 James H. Ezell, Junior is James H.
Ezell, 1819 - 1900, the son of Samuel and Rachel Paigne Ezell
and husband of Artemissa Scruggs Dobbins, daughter of William
Dobbins, Jr.
3. John M. Hicks is John Martin Hicks,

January 29th One thousand Eight-hundred and forty two
between William Dobbins of the State of South Carolina
Spartanburg County of the one part and John Hicks of the Same
place of the other part witnesseth that the said William Dobbins
in consideration of the Sum of thirty Dollars to him in hand
paid before the Sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt
whereof the said Dobbins doth hereby acknowledge hath granted
Sold aliened Conveyed confirmed and by these presents do give
grant Sell Conveyed and Confirmed unto the said John Hicks a
certain plantation or Tract of Land containing thirty acres, the
same more or less, it be a part of Tract of land formerly
granted to George Williams and is part of the Same that said
Dobbins now lives on lying and being in the District aforesaid lying
on the South East side of Island Creek
Beginning on a maple a
conditional corner between William Dobbins and John Hicks,
running S25E 29 to Spanish Oak thence S25W 26 pine, thence N85W
25 a stake, thence along the Rocky field fence to the Creek to
the beginning
together with all woods
waters mines minerals belonging thereto, to said John Hicks his
heirs and assigns forever. And as for myself my heirs Executors
administrators and assigns do promise to warrant by these
presents forever defend the Said land and premises every part
thereof to the said John Hicks his heirs and assigns forever. In

Dobbins, daughter of William Sr and Susannah Collins
