Obituary: Departed this life on Sunday morning 25th ult. at
the residence of his father, Columbus J. Waldrop in the 20th
year of his age, after a painful illness of seven weeks which he
bore with the greatest fortitude and resignation. He had
endeared himself to many friend by his kindness and urbanity of
conduct. He was well acquainted to the writer of this, who can
truly say he was gentlemanly in all his relations: as a son he was
dutiful- as a friend he was faithful- as a member of the Sons of
Temson, he was loyal and true. His remains were accompanied to
the lonely grave by a large number of friends and acquaintances
who sorrow was shown by the tears shed on the occasion; yet they
wept not as those having no hope, for the deceased although not
a member of the visible church of the Lord upon earth, had been
serious for some months previous to his death and was much given to
the reading of the Scriptures, and left the pleasing assurance
that he was will and ready to go, and expected to join the
church (missing words) where he hopes to meet his (missing

Obituary: 1854 Died at the residence of his father in
Greenville, District on Saturday, 7th October EDMUND G. WALDROP
aged 23 years. Scarcely are dried the clods upon the grave of
one "early loved and lost" ere the bereaved parents are called
upon to mourn the death of another affectionate, loving and
beloved son. Truly the dispensations of Providence seem
mysterious when we see the beloved, the youthful and gay called
suddenly from time to eternity. But God, his his wisdom cannot
err. His friends weep not as those who have no hope, for the
deceased gave full assurance of his preparedness and willingness
to die, and therefore feel that their loss is his eternal gain,
and though he has been called from the companionship of the
world he has found a home in the Paradise of God, there to enjoy the
society of all the happy spirits in praising his God and Savior
forever. It is a happy reflection to know, that although his
friends are deprived of his company here, they may meet him
again where parting is no more, where sad farewells are never
heard, nor the tear of sorrow seen to fall.

Note: this newspaper clipping
was attached to page 8 above: Died at Greenville on
the 1st instant, NANNIE ARTHUR, youngest child of col. W. II and
Mrs. C.M. Campbell aged 1 year, 5 months and 6 days. Departed
this life on the 27th December 1859 at the residence of his father
in Greenville Distirict OTIS D. WALDREP.; in the 23td year of his
age after an illness of fifteen days of typhoid fever.
The deceased though not a member of nay Church, left the brightest
evidence of his acceptance with God. He professed to have
obtained pardon for his sins in the early part of his affliction
and often requested his friends to read to him from the sacred
Scriptures, and sing to him the songs of Zion, and he too, with
trembling voice sang the praises of God as long as he strength.
A day or two before his death he requested his weeping companion
to sing for him the hymn, "I would not live alway, I ask not
to stay," And he himself while almost in the jaws of death
sang "There is a happy Land, Far, far away." He seemed
well aware of his approaching dissolution and talked cheerfully on
the subject of death when mentioned to him until a few hours
before his death when he fell asleep from which he never awoke,
but yielded up his spirit to God who gave it, without a struggle
or groan. Thus passed away one who by his straightforward
conduct and temperate habits, and gained many friend; one who
was just in the vigor on manhood and one who but recently led
the object of his affections to the Hymeneal altar, with buoyant
prospects of a long and happy life; but alas how soon has he been
cut down. Truly we may say, "in the midst of life we are in
death". The deceased leaves a companion, father mother, grand
mothers and brother with numerous relations and friend to mourn
his loss. May God comfort his bereaved parents, whose family
has been visited again and again by the hand of death, this
being the third son they have followed to the grave in the
course of a few years. May they cheerfully submit to the
workings of Providence and remember that whatsoever God does is
right, for he cannot err. May he in a special manner comfort and
sustain his youthful companion, whose brightest anticipations
have been so early nipped in the bud. May she bow submissively
at the foot of the Cross and say "not my will but thine be
done".
