JOHN
CHRISTOPHER YOUNG died at the home of his son, Dr. J.P. YOUNG, at
Richburg, S.C., on March 23, 1916, at the ripe old age of ninety
years. He was born in Laurens Co., near Clinton, Oct.22, 1825 and
was the son of GEORGE and MARY DUCKETT YOUNG. When the call to arms
first sounded, he enlisted in the Secession Guards, Capt. William
Perryman's company, 2d South Carolina Infantry, Kershaw's Brigade.
He served 3 years in Virginia, participating in all the battles
fought by his command. He then joined Capt. Peter Goodwin's 6th
South Carolina Cavalry, and in the battle of Trevilian Station,
June 12, 1864, he was sorely wounded, losing his right
leg.
He
married on May 2, 1867, to MISS SUSAN VIRGINIA LONG, of Laurens,
who died in 1914. Of this union 4 sons and one daughter
survive.
As a citizen
with a character pure and true, as a Confederate soldier with a
record equal to the best, as a husband and father measuring up to
all the requirements, and a consistent member of the Baptist
Church, Comrade Young lived a blameless life and has gone to his
reward, loved and respected, leaving another great break in the
fast-thinning ranks of the Confederate veterans.
