DIES FROM BEING THROWN BY HORSE
JOE GOSNELL, SON OF
PROMINENT INMAN MAN, DIES FROM INJURIES RECEIVED THURSDAY
AFTERNOON
Joe
Gosnell, the 14 year old son of J.H. Gosnell, a wealthy and
prominent resident of Inman, died yesterday afternoon as the result
of injuries he received by being thrown from a horse late
Thursday afternoon. It is not known
whether the horse was running away with the boy or whether
the boy was racing the horse. No one seems to have seen the
accident clearly enough to tell this, but at all events the horse
was going very fast when the accident occurred. The horse
does not have the reputation of being a fractious one.
RUNNING ALONG WITH TRAIN It seems
that Mr. Gosnell, the Father of the boy, lives on the
outskirts of the city, and that the boy rode into town late Thursday
afternoon to procure some things for the family. It seems
that he left the drug store about 7:30 o'clock for home,
just about the same time that No. 10, the train for
Spartanburg was pulling out. The dirt road leading to the
boy's residence seems to run along parallel with the
railroad, and the train, and boy seemed to have started out
together. Some people who saw this think that the horse
became frightened at the train. At all events, the horse
began to go faster and the boy was seen to reach over and
clasp his arms about the horse's neck. A little further on
the road curves sharply, and the boy was seen to leave the
horse's back and to fall by the side of the road. Upon their running
to his assistance, the people found the lad unconscious. He
was picked up and carried to his home, which he had nearly
reached when he fell, and medical aid was sent for.
Although the Doctors worked with him continually, he
never regained consciousness, but was delirious till his
death yesterday afternoon. It was not ascertained whether he
died from the shock or concussion of the brain. There were
no fractures of the bones of the body. The
burial will take place at Liberty Church this afternoon at 2
o'clock. The services will be conducted by Rev. H.C. Brabham,
assisted by Rev. H.L. Baggot.

MATTIE
WOFFORD GRAY Laurensville Herald
Friday, April 5, 1901 IN MEMORIAL MRS. MATTIE
WOFFORD GRAY was born May 4, 1846. She was the daughter of MR.
and MRS. HARVEY WOFFORD of Spartanburg county., and a great niece of
BENJAMIN WOFFORD, the founder of Wofford College. She was
married to MR. T.R.L. GRAY, a merchant of Lanford Station,
Laurens Co., S.C. on the 16th of November, 1875 and died Feb.
7, 1901. Not only her husband and immediate family , but
also a very large circle of friends are sorely bereaved
because of the death of this elect woman. She was appreciated
and loved because of her worth in the home, in the community,
in the church. Rich in fruitage is any life dominated by a love
that draws inspiration from Jesus the Son of God....
During the last year of her life she was a great sufferer, though
she knew that she had been stricken by a fatal disease, she
maintained a bright, cheerful disposition and submitted to
intense physical suffering with remarkable patience and
fortitude... her Christian graces gave forth their greatest
lustre. As stars, on a moonless night shine with great
brilliancy, so, her faith and trust in God shone out most
gloriously...she found her everlasting home. W.
