TWO
CHEROKEE MEN KILLED EACH OTHER
Gaffney, Nov. 22 - I.P. SARRATT and REVIS
DAWSON killed each other at SARRATT'S home, just over the
county line of Cherokee county, yesterday afternoon at 6
o'clock. DAWSON was SARRATT'S grandson and was about 25 years
of age. Sarratt was 67.
Going to the
Sarratt's house, Dawson, it is said, sat down and talked
quietly with the old man, showing a copy of the divorce which he had
recently obtained from his wife in N.C. Dawson suggested that
they walk out to the hog pen. According to the statement of
MRS. SARRATT, who said that her husband reached to the mantel
and took down his revolver, which was in a scabbard and that
Dawson saw him do this, then MRS. SARRATT continued , she
heard her husband say , " If you do I will-" and then the
shooting commenced.
Dawson emptied his pistol and Sarratt shot
twice. Only one ball took effect in Sarratt, he being shot
through the right breast. Both men died immediately after
being shot, neither of them speaking. Dawson's father lives
within a few miles of Gaffney. |

COLONEL
ISAAC SMITH Spartanburg Express
Oct. 15, 1857 DEATH OF COL. ISAAC
SMITH It is our painful duty to record this week, the
death of COL. ISAAC SMITH, a prominent and useful
citizen of our district. He died at his residence 5
miles below our town, on Wednesday, the 7th inst. His
health had been very infirm for more than a year past, and his
death although much lamented, was not unexpected to his family
and friends. He was a man of liberal views, a graduate
and firm friend of Our State College.
Since writing the above, we have been kindly furnished by a friend,
with a more just tribute to his memory, which our readers
will find in another column. ->
DEATH OF AN AGED AND USEFUL CITIZEN COL.
ISAAC SMITH departed this life on Thursday the 8th, inst., at
his residence, 5 miles south of Spartanburg Court House of
Dropsy, in the 73d year of his age. For
more than a year, COL. SMITH had been laboring, under the
disease , but for the greater portion of this period he continued
to go about his farm and preserve an active
superintendence over all his business. And even after
the disease bad fully mastered his body- in his last
moments- his mental faculties were unimpaired.
Throughout an active life, extending over nearly fourscore years,
embracing excited periods in which he bore a prominent
part, COL. SMITH illustrated in his daily conduct, the
highest virtues of a South Carolina gentleman. At the
usual age he was entered at the S.C. College where he
graduated in 1808, in the class with GOV. MILLER,
CALHOUN, HARPER and JUDGE EVANS and others. Upon graduating
he entered upon the profession of law, which he pursued for a
number of years, till his marriage, when he retired from
the bar, for the purpose of devoting himself exclusively
to agricultural pursuits. He was not permitted, however
to continue in this retirement. His vigorous intellect
and sterling patriotism pointed him out to his fellow
citizens as one whose services were needed in their behalf,
in the halls of Legislation. For several years he was one of the
most faithful Representatives of Spartanburg District in
the lower House... As a father, he was
affectionate and gentle, as a neighbor, obliging and
hospitable, as a citizen, he loved his State, no man was ever
more upright or just. Patriotism was his, by
inheritance, he being the son of a brave and
distinguished officer of the Revolutionary War, who, after closing
an active military career, reaped additional laurels in
the capacity of a Judge of the County Courts. To many of
those now in our midst, COL. SMITH, owing to his life of
retirement of late years is personally unknown.
