United Daughters of the Confederacy -South Carolina
Notes:
MISS BERTIE SMITH of Greer, reported one of the most active
Children of the Confederacy Chapters, with 72 members, of
which she is director, and creates much
enthusiasm.
The Drayton Rutherford Chapter, of Newberry, through MRS.
J.H. SUMMERS, filed 110 Service Cross records at the recent
convention. Mrs. Summer was elected Recorder of
Crosses.
The John Bratton Chapter of Winnsboro, has the distinction
of having in its membership the Poet Laureate of the South
Carolina Division, MISS KATE FLANIGAN. The prize poem was
read at the State convention and the winner crowned with the
laurel wreath.
LEE - JACKSON Day was one hundred percent in observance. All
over the State fitting exercises were held, many in the
events of dinners for the veterans, their wives and widows
and the 'Girls of the Sixties'. The observance of the day in
high schools is deserving of special mention.
