Bethesda Church, organized in 1769 if not earlier, is one of the ancient Presbyterian congregations of the Up-country. Its cemetery, enclosed by a stone fence, is large and old. The following transcriptions represent only a minority of the early legible tombstones there.

Sacred to the memory of Dr. James Washington McNeel, who was born March the 11th, 1815, and died October the 24th, 1854, aged 39 years, 7 months, and 13 days, after an illness of three days, leaving his wife with many relations and friends to mourn his death…

To the memory of James S. W. McNeel who was born Oct 10th, 1853, and died Oct 31st, 1855, aged 2 years & 21 days. The only son of J. W. & S. E. McNeel leaves his bereaved mother to mourn his loss…

Sacred to the memory of James Martin, who died Feby 10th, 1836, aged 84 years. He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War and was in many of its battles and skirmishes. He was a member of the convention that framed the Constitution of this State, And served seven times in the Legislature.

Margaret Leech, died, the 24th of April, 1810, aged 69 years.

Beneath this monument are deposited the remains of Mary G.d.n Clinton, daughter of David and Catharine Gordon. She departed this life the 19th May 1805, Aged 33 Years. Also sacred to the memory of William Clinton, who departed this life May 13th, 1810, Aged 46 Years. Also their two children.

Sacred to the memory of Thomas Clendinen, who was born 1741 and died 20th of April 1817. Also his second wife Nancy Clendinen, who died 1786.

Sacred to the memory of Catharine Clendinen, who was born 21st of May 1822 and died 18th of September 1822. Also Phalby Clendinen, who was born 25th of December 1823 and died 24th of June 1825, Both infant daughters of Robert and Mary Clendenin.

Sacred to the memory of William, infant son of William and Mary Hemingway, born May 17th, 1836, died Nov. 24th, 1836, aged 7 mo. & 7 da.

Sacred to the memory of Robert Clendinen, Jr, Son of Robert and Mary Clendinen, who was born Dec. 31st, 1825, and died Sept. 26th, 1826.

Sacred to the memory of Robert Clendinen, Esq, who was born 7th of March, 1784, and died 29th of August, 1830, in the 47th year of his age.
