Greenwood is a small town and the County Seat of Greenwood County, named around 1824 after a nearby plantation owned by John McGehee, Jr. Caroline McGehee, wife of John, Jr. is reportedly responsible for naming the 600 acre plantation for which the town was named.

Charted in 1857, it is the 17th largest city in South Carolina. The development of the railroad is directly responsible for the growth of Greenwood. The first rail service was provided by the Greenwood & Columbia in 1852 which was a major effort to provide rail service to the Upstate area. Over the years rail service has declined coinciding with the advent and popularity of private owned automobiles.

Hodges was named after Major General George Washington Hodges who was commander of all of South Carolina's Militia. George Washington Hodges born 9 September 1792 and died 24 March 1876. He fought in the 1812 War. His grave is north east of town in a hidden pre-civil war cemetery.

Ninety Six was established on the frontier in the early 18th century; it was known for a time as "Jews Land" because some prominent Sephardic Jewish families of London bought extensive property there. The Salvador and DaCosta families bought 200,000 acres (810 km2), intending to help some poor Sephardic families to relocate to the New World.

The settlement became the capital city of the Ninety-Six District when it was established in July 1769. Since the late 20th century, the National Park Service operates the Ninety Six National Historic Site at the site of the original settlement and fort.
