Family of John Truesdel of South Carolina - Part Two
Immigrant Generation

John Truesdel, son of John and ___________, see Part One, b. Kinghill [townland], County Down,
Province of Ulster, Ireland [now Northern Ireland] 1740, d. Kershaw Co, S.C. 20 Mch 1806 [Fam Rec];
m. in Ireland - Molly [Mary] Hollingsworth, dau of Henry & his 1st wife [name unknown] Hollingsworth,
b. prob Annachinchage [two miles north of Kinghill] @ 1732, d. Kershaw Co, S.C. 15 Mch 1815.

Leaving his father's home, John Truesdel with his wife and children embarked on the brigantine
"FREEMASON" in 1772, landing later the same years at Charleston, S.C.. As one of the 53 eligible
passengers, including several neighbors from the Rathfriland area, John petitioned the Provincial
Council at its 6 Jan 1773 meeting for his immigrant bounty - 250 acres of land. All petitioners were
certified as being properly accredited protestants in good standing [meaning at this time Anglicans].
Only six of the petitioners were able to pay for their warrants, John not being one of these. Based
on his grants, John Truesdel settled in the Flat Rock between the present county seat of Kershaw County
and Heath Springs.

John Truesdel was a soldier of the Revolution having served 40 days in Col Kershaw's Regt [militia] in
1783. In Census 1790, as "John Tisdale jr" [enumerator's error] he was living in the Camden District,
which contains the present Kershaw County, having a family - males, 4 over 14, 4 under, females 2. By
1800 Kershaw County had been formed and John had turned over to and was living with his son John who in
turn had adopted the title of "Junior".

John was a poor correspondent, not writing to his people back in Kinghill until 1792, twenty years after
his departure.

In places, through error, Molly is given the surname of "Miller". She was a Hollingsworth, sister of
half-sister of Hena Hollingsworth [see letter of 1773]. The Hollingsworth tradition parallels that of
the Truesdale - Cromwellian soldier at Drogheda, moving later to County Down. While Molly must have
been a Presbyterian in order to marry John Truesdel, elsewhere in Ireland at this time the Hollingsworths
were Quakers. Both John and Molly are buried in unmarked graves above Kershaw toward Heath Springs.

in 1782 hoping to join his family but was
				not again heard from [1792].

John Truesdel jr, son of John and Molly [Hollingsworth], b. Kinghill 14 Mch 1769, d. Kershaw County, S.C. 16 Jan 1854;
m. 1 Jan 1797 - Nancy McDonald, dau John McDonald, b. Richmond County, N.C. 22 Aug 1780, d. Kershaw County, S.C. 11 Jul 1854.

As eldest son John jr presumably inherited his father's realty, primogeniture then being legal. There is
no will nor transfers recorded. With his brothers James and Hollingsworth acquiring holdings across the
line in Lancaster County while John jr remained on the original grant, the presumption is confirmed. In
1800 John jr was head of family [Census]. In 1810 his widowed mother was living with him, he owned 8 slaves
and, in addition to farming, produced annually 170 yards of cloth. In 1840 he owned 56 slaves. According to
Drakeford Ms he was a small man, Nancy was short and plump. The family were Presbyterians.

At John's death his holdings were extensive - several plantations and 107 slaves. His will, written in
1852 [Kershaw County Wills III A 192] bequeathed:
"to my wife Nancy the dwelling house and 200 acres [100 bought of John Chestnut and 100 of Robert Mahaffey]
lying on creek below Hanging Rock bridge. Also old George his wife Hannah and 5 of their oldest children
	* * * * for a year after my death; also their beds and furniture. At the death of my wife Nancy, land to
be divided equally among the sons of my son James Truesdell. My daughter Elizabeth Haile, the children of
my daughter Margaret Ballard [as one heir]. vis: Caroline, Columbus, Emily; my son John M and my daughter
Martha Gooch - share and share alike * * * to my sons Jesse and John N * * * bank stock to be divided equally".

The remainder was to be sold and divided equally, Mary Catoe's heirs excepted. John had objected to her
marriage and, in effect, had disinherited her. He left her sons only $100 each.

John and Nancy Truesdel are buried in Hanging Rock Churchyard, his tombstone with the added inscription,
"Eighty years a resident of Kershaw County".
