Yauhannah Historical Society: Direct links to data on web site removed by request.

Genealogy Links: Added links to my feature articles on genealogy topics as published in Net4TV Voice.

Page Layout and Design: How do you like to new layout? I have the switch to a lighter color scheme complete, so I should be able to return to adding content now.

Connection and Revision: Internet connection finally fixed at 1:00 PM in the afternoon. Meanwhile, I have been completely revising the site again. I had a chance to see the previous version on a different computer and noted that, on some monitors, the dark backgrounds do not allow the text to show through as well. Switching to lighter colors.

Connection: Would have loved to have worked on the site more today, but lost Internet connectivity thanks to AT&T (formerly TCI) Cable. A service person came out to install cable for my new neighbors and "killed" my connection. The cool thing about cable modem connectivity is that it's superfast ... when it's working.

Books and Publications: Started off the Books page this morning depicting selected books and one CDROM from the Three Rivers Historical Society. If you know of any I missed from their list, let me know. Also, presented their quarterly newsletter on the Pubs page.

Gen/Hist Societies: Added descriptive comments on the relative value of data available on-line at various Genealogical and Historical Societies, and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. Feel free to correct me, if I'm wrong, but ...

Bible Records, Obituaries, Military Records, Tax Lists/Account Books, Census Records and Tombstone Inscriptions: Added links to five Bible Records, five Obituaries, a military unit, a partial 1870 Census (Collins township), a 1787 Tax List, and four separate cemetery tombstone pages from the Yauhannah Historical Society site. Also added links to GenConnect Boards for Obituaries, Pensions, Bibles, Biographies, and Deeds.

History: Added a short but descriptive history compiled by the South Carolina State Library.

Help Wanted: Started outlining areas where help is needed. Consider volunteering.

Gen/Hist Societies: Added links to Horry County Historical Society, South Carolina Historical Society, South Carolina Department of Archives and History, and South Carolina Genealogical Society.

Wills/Administrations: Started off the Wills page with a link directly to the GenConnect Board for posting a Georgetown County Will (I learned my lesson on the query page). Also posted links to 21 wills found on the Yauhannah Historical Society web site, recommended by Deryl Young.

In a discussion with Pam Traynham, it was determined that my use of cascading style sheets to determine font face, color, and alignment renders differently -- unreadable -- on Netscape's browser in comparison to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. A change in the BODY tag is now implemented which I hope will resolve the issue to some extent. I also changed the way TABLE background colors and borders are implemented as well.

Updated the following GenConnect Boards for Georgetown County to allow return to this site:
Queries | Bibles | Bios | Deeds | Obits | Pensions | Wills.

Pine Bluff Cemetery: New page added this morning which includes tombstone inscriptions for the above-mentioned cemetery. This page appeared on the previous coordinator's site, without reference to a submitter. I found it more difficult to revise than creating a new page from scratch, due to the significant differences in HTML coding style. Cemeteries List and Tombstone Inscriptions updated to reflect this link.

Mailing Lists: Added content to the page early this morning, including how to Subscribe and UnSubscribe from SGEORGE-L/SCGEORGE-D list. Also include links to several other mailing lists of related interest.

History: Added a link to Hobcaw Barony, provided by James Miller.

Gen/Hist Societies: Added link to Yauhannah site suggested by Deryl Young. Check it out! it is a microcosm of what we need to accomplish for the whole county. Also added a link to Three Rivers Historical Society, which is a different site than I remember visiting in the past.

Had a great email discussion on the Cemeteries List page with Pamela Traynham, and will incorporate her suggestions as soon as possible. She was the original source of the Cemetery list provided to the former County Coordinator.

In response to initial feedback from SCGEORGE-L, SCROOTS-L, and SC-Genealogy-L Mailing lists, the following updates were made:

Surname Queries: Added link to Post New Surname Query, initially left off the Query Section's Index page. I intend to utilize the GenConnect Query Board for Georgetown County as it will save me time in posting. I will update the Query Index from the Board approximately once a week depending on the level of traffic for the site.

NOTE: The GenConnect Boards have been available since about July 1999, and when I took over managing them, there were a total of three queries. By evening today, after only a few hours of advertising, queries on the GenConnect Board have doubled from three to six.

Broken Links: Initial feedback from several List readers also commented on the number of broken links to data, despite my having mentioned that this was the initial upload of the site, and that there was a lot left to do. Rather than explain it, I have gone ahead and placed practically blank shell pages on the site for each internal link with the words Under Construction on them for the following pages: Church Records, Bible Records, Probate Records, Obituaries, Maps, Deeds/Grants, Military Records, History, Biographies, Family Pages, South Carolina Links, Southern Links, Genealogy Links, Gen/Hist Societies, Family Associations, Books, Publications, Look-Ups, and Mailing Lists. Rome wasn't built in a day... but I guess Web Sites are expected to be.

Also created or edited/updated the following pages this date:

Main Page: Added Search Engine from FreeFind and link to our host RootsWeb.

Neighboring Counties: Added links to SCGenWeb pages for adjacent and nearby counties: Charleston, Berkeley, Williamsburg, Florence, Marion, Dillon, and Horry. Added a map revealing the geographic relationship between the counties.

Cemeteries: Started work on this section by researching Georgetown County cemeteries through the USGS Mapping Query Engine. Developed a list with links to Tiger Maps showing their location. Also added list compiled by John Simmons, former Georgetown Co. coordinator. It will be merged into a single list soon.

Gazetteer: Basically a dictionary of place names, the Gazetteer will depict population centers, rivers/streams, churches and other key buildings, and other geographic data of interest to genealogists. Work begun on populated places today, and I uploaded a USGS satellite image of the Georgetown area which I got off of Microsoft's TerraServer.

First upload of completely redesigned Georgetown County SCGenWeb site pages at it's new home on RootsWeb. New pages, uploaded today, include:

Index: Redesigned the front door of the site to hopefully promote sharing of genealogy data by showing what possibilities exist. Categorized topics with links to each section in a logical format. Included a map of Georgetown County cropped from the 1895 Atlas map of South Carolina. Thanks go to Victoria Proctor as I received much of my inspiration from her Marion Co. pages.

Surname Queries: In progress, the Surname Queries Index is complete for surnames beginning with A thru D. I have also indexed Submitter names to make it easy for you to update ALL your queries, and determine who is researching which surnames.

Census Records: Developed a page revealing the status of online census records for Georgetown County. We really need some folks to step up to the plate on this category, and get the census records online. If you'd like to volunteer to assist in this project, visit the Census Project South Carolina page.

Tax Lists & Account Books: Developed a page with pointers to other types of records that might be available to put online. I included an HTML-version of the only document currently in the USGenWeb Archives Project for Georgetown County. Thanks to Steven Coker for contributing this document.

Cemeteries and Inscriptions: Started pages to both list all the known cemeteries in Georgetown County, and provide a place to document tombstone inscriptions from those cemeteries. Once again, this is an area in need of your help. Please visit the South Carolina pages of the Tombstone Inscription Project if you'd like to assist with this endeavor.

What's New? and Help Wanted: You are reading the What's New? page, so I expect no further explanation is necessary. I have uploading the shell for the Help Wanted page, which will soon describe how you can contribute data, time, or skills to make this project successful.

COMING SOON: As you can tell by the front page of this site, I intend to include as much genealogical data as possible. In addition to those depicted above, look for data on Georgetown County Church, Bible, Marriage, and Court Records in the near future. Also, I will have Deeds & Grants, Maps, Gazetteer of place names, and County History information. Wills, Obituaries, and Tombstone Inscriptions are in the works, as well as Family Pages, Biographies, and Military Records. Lots of work left to do.
