Dr. Niles A. Borop Jr., whose hands were the first to touch
thousands of Aiken residents, died May 22 at his home in Aiken at the
age of
90. He retired from his private medical practice in the early 1980s but
continued to work at the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation 1989.
Dr. Borop, Board Certifiied physician in Obstretrics and Gynecology, was
an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Aiken
Rotary Club, and a member at Houndslake Country Club, where, at the age
of 68, he shot a hole-in-one.
Born on January 12, 1916, in Shirley, Ill., he attended Eureka College
and was a fraternity brother of President Ronald Reagan. His parents,
the Rev. Niles Alfred Borop Sr., and his mother, Mary Maude Ceruti,
served several Christian Churches in Berkeley County, S.C. He
transferred to the University of South Carolina and graduated from the
University of South Carolina and the Medical College of the State
of South Carolina in Charleston. He opened his first practice in rural
North Carolina in 1943. His wife, Meta, remembers Dr. Borop delivering
babies in tobacco barns in the rural community where he practiced. He
entered the Army as a physician during the Korean War. He moved to
Aiken in 1955 and was one of the first obstetricians and gynecologists
in the county. Dr. Borop delivered the first set of triplets in Aiken
County.
In recent years he enjoyed seeing his former patients when he was out
for dinner or shopping in Aiken and often being introduced to the men
and
women he had helped bring into the world over the decades he practiced
in Aiken.
Dr. Borop is survived by his wife of 62 years, Meta Baggett Borop; a
brother, Capt. James David Borop, ret. of Winter Park, Fla.; three
